I have been sent a point cloud "scan" of the inside of a pipe, and told to find the actual minimum diameter. But let's not mind that second part...
I basically need to use this point cloud (in RCP format) to create some type of surface representing the pipe. I have NO Idea how to do this. Can anyone give me suggestions?
I have MicroStation CONNECT, OpenRoads Designer, Power InRoads and Power Geopak.
I have created terrains from point clouds, but I have no clue how to create a tube.
Thank you.
I believe Descartes can do what you want. Even then, the tools available in Descartes still very rough.

If its for a pipe, this Descartes functionality in ORD (and Microstation if you have it included) might help.
Fit Cylinder - One Click Mode - ContextCapture | Descartes | Pointools | Orbit Wiki - ContextCapture | Descartes | Pointools | Orbit - Bentley Communities
I've used it a few times and works well with some trial and error of settings. Naturally you'll need to get the RCP exported to a universal Point Cloud format like LAS, XYZ, etc. to get it into the DGN environment first.

Mark

Good point as Descartes functionality is quite basic at least regarding Point clouds and in CONNECT edition even lost some of functions but not reflected in price. There is no longer flexibility in portfolio balancing as it is easy to create accidental usage when trying to experiment.

Yea.. this is a longstanding problem. On one hand, Bentley has a lot of apps, which in theory should be able to capture most if not all project needs. There should be an efficiency and advantage for the vendor that the user should be able to tap into. Minimised training downtime, translation loss etc. But I suspect there is not much cross product use because of the pricing associated with having multiple apps especially with single named user licensing.
Example 1: Main app: OpenRoads + Side app: OpenBldgs = 1.5 to 2 x subscription? Revenue accretion would be minimal as almost no one will be able to justify the cost and will just do things manually. Monthly Virtuosity etc licensing doesnt really address the needs of cross hopping power user.
Example 2: Platform to vertical: legacy seats upgrades 1.5 to 2-3 x subsription depending on the vertical. Again, the costs will be difficult to justify, especially when there are cheaper alternatives out there. Forget the cost conscious Mstn Lite / Power Draft market.
Ideally, Mstn should work like Catia's Workbenches which allow the user to mix and match any of the verticals. All and any vertical can be 'companioned' with another. This would allow Bentley to compete with other apps that have more marketshare : features... instead of relying on old account inertia : maintenance mode to maintain revenue.
The problem is that most of the Bentley verticals were acquired and not dev'd inhouse, some even ACAD-based, so not very compatible or 'open'. Hopefully, corrected with iTwins.js apps. Will OpenTunnel Designer be the last dgn-based app Bentley ships?
