Connect edition is frustrating CRASH CRASH

We are attempting to switch over to CE.

I spent time customizing menus.

CE crashes on the simplest tasks.

After all of these years, I still feel like CE is a beta version.

Why on earth would I be inclined to make the switch

  • What version are you running? CE versions older than the last couple of years did have stability issues, but the more recent releases have been fine.

  • In addition to what version I would ask how are users using the software.  We fully adopted CE company wide back around update 13 or 14 i don't recall the exact version number.  Most user issues and crashes have been users trying to model/draw like it's v8i and it's not.  The change to Parasolids is a double edged sword.  Some tasks are going to take longer others are going to be much faster if you adopt them.  For example in v8i many users used fence stretch for everything.  This feature is dead in CE and just does not work don't try or pretend like it does.  Generally speaking using any of the parametric union/difference tools leads to un-predictable results in the property tree.  That said you can work around them, use them sparingly or even use the legacy tools for this.

We try to keep models at or under 50mb within a single file generally speaking this helps but we still have drawings with a few hundred references.  This is something v8i couldn't do it would run out of memory just opening such drawings.

Lastly if your importing allot of data or using older v8i data make sure your running the keyin "convert acistoparasolid all" this can improve performance way more then most users give it credit for.

  • Hi,

We do simple 2D line drawings (structural plans for wood framed housing).

A simple crash is  to keyIn  "active style NoGood" and close Microstation.  Microstation will appear to close, then several seconds later give a crash dialog box, saying that it has recorded information in the logs.  Nothing gets recorded.  Microstation may then either fully close, or continue running without any dialog.  (See Windows Task Manager.)

This error occurs in the latest version (Microstation CE Update 17-2).

Another very simple thing is that if you have the reference dialog box open in the second application window (second monitor), it has issues.  Using the dialog box, select a reference file and use the "File--Detach" command.  It works.  Then do a "File--Attach" and nothing happens.  If you want to attache a file, you can start a fence command, start your Power Selector command, and then you can return to "File-Attach" and get it to work!  That was reported for Update 15 in 2020 and it is still broken in 2023.

  • used fence stretch for everything

Strange this is one seems to work ok and actually is only way how many operations can be done as editing through properties or modify tools mostly doesn't achieve such results. Manipulating element parts is missing feature in Microstation.
