Do saved views not recognize Global display/freeze settings?

I know they've been around for a while, but I never bothered with them before. Since Saved Views are going to be part of the OpenRoads sheet creation process, I thought I might try using them a little more frequently to famliarize myself with them.

I know that Saved Views claim to store level display settings, but is that only View Display settings?

I prefer to use Global Display or Freeze level display, especially when setting up master/container files for sheet generation. These are empty files that are used to "collect" references, and adjust the level display so that every sheet presents the same way. If it want the level off in every sheet, I want it all the way off! I tend not to use View Display for comprehensive display control. I save it for the times I only need something off temporarily.

However, it seems that Global Display/Freeze isn't getting saved into my saved view. For example, I have one master file for my turning movements, but the turning movement reference has levels for Car Left, Car Right, Truck Left, Truck Right, etc. I could choose to make a master file for each turning movement, but I thought it might be better to make Saved Views for each option. Freeze every turning level except Car Left, and create a Car Left Saved View, and so on. But when I attach that master file to my sheet file with the saved view, I see all my turning movements on, as if it didn't save my level control. I attached it to update "Presentation only".

What am I missing? Is this a setting I've overlooked, or am I trying to use Saved Views incorrectly?

I am working in PowerGeopak V8i (08.11.09.918) but I'm posting this here because this is basic MicroStation functionality.

  • Mary,

When a Saved View is created the display state (on/off) of each level in the Level Display dialog will be stored in the Saved View, but the Global Display state (enabled/disabled) of each level in the Level Manager dialog will not be stored in the Saved View.

When you apply the Saved View you can enable Levels in order to display the levels that where ON in the Level Display dialog when the Saved View was created.

  • I never use Level Manager to control level display. I always use the Level Display dialog, but I do switch the mode from View Display to Global Freeze (or Global Display). Are you saying that Saved View doesn't recognize the Global settings because they are level settings (even though they are set through the Level Display dialog)?

Ugh...I detest View Display. I tend to work with more than one view open, which is more views than my coworkers. It's annoying as all to open View 2 and see something entirely different than what I see in View 1. The only way to get a consistent look is to open every single view to manage the display (and then turn almost all of them off because nobody works with View 8 - but you never know!). I suppose it's not THAT much work to do for a container file (except it has to be done any time you need to change any display) but it IS extra work when the Global settings can handle everything with one click.

So, saved views may be worth the extra effort, but they are just that little bit more.

While we're at it, because I don't know and I don't use them yet - if I Save a view in my reference file with my levels on and off for that view, and I attach that saved view as my reference, does that "View Display" apply to every view? or just whatever view number I used to save the view? As in, if I set up View 2 the way I want so that I can create a Saved View, when I attach that Saved view as a reference, will that level display apply to only to View 2, or will it apply to View 1 and View 3 as well? I want my reference to look the same, whichever view I have open. If Saved Views only save View Display settings, how do I get all my views to display the same way?
