Active Level Issue

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone would know how I could fix a simple level issue that I am having? My issue is that, on a new level I had created, called "Practice Basemap", I had added in some designs such as hatching, notes, etc. But now, whenever I try and move one of those drawings or edit them in any way, I can not since it isn't the current active level. Yet, anytime I try to change that on the Level Manager, the option to make the practice level active is greyed out. I'm not sure what I can do to change that, or any tips that you may have.

Thank you!

  • Check your Locks at the lower right of your MicroStation screen, and see if "Levels" is turned on. The level lock only allows you to manipulate elements on the active level. To work with elements on any level, turn the Level Lock off.

The other part of this question - is this all in one drawing? Or are we dealing with reference files? Reference files are an entirely different subject.

  • The Level Lock is selected off, and that didn't change anything. And yes, it should all be in one drawing, and it was just a newly created level that now I can not make active again.

  • In this screenshot, this is the current level I want to make active. And I apologize, but I have just now figured out that this is in fact a reference, so I do not know what the next steps would need to be. Sorry for not knowing that until now, and please let me know if there is any further information I can provide!

  • Highlight the level in Level Manager. If you right-click, you should get an option for "Copy".
Then navigate to the list of levels in your active drawing. Right-click in the list and choose "Paste". You may need to scroll through your list to find the new level, but when you find it, you should be able to activate it.

If that doesn't work, you can always copy any element from that level into your drawing, then Match the level from that.

  • So, I've done the "copy and paste" method, but my issue is that I still cannot get rid of the previous level, and I actually can not copy the entire level on to the other. Meaning the copy option is greyed out for the entire "practice" level, and I have to copy and paste each individual element.

  • I thought you just wanted to get that level to exist in your current file. Not that you wanted to copy all of your elements from your reference file into your current file. We were talking about a level, not an element. The level exists in a reference file. You need to create that level in your active file to have it available in your active file. You can't "activate" a reference level. Your active level has to exist in your active drawing, not in a reference file.

Can you please try to explain, one step a time, in very simple, exact terms what you have and what you want to do.

You say you created this level and drew elements on this level. Which drawing did you do that in?

What drawing are you in now? Is it that drawing, or is it a different drawing?

What are you trying to do? copy a level? copy elements? something else?

  • Okay so, in this drawing there are seven different levels. The main one, titled 22-045 Sheet  Street was the original level and is currently the active level. But, the level that is "selected" titled 22-045 Basemap_Practice_Jen is what I wish to make the new active level. The previous person had made that level and created their own notes, and then referenced it on to this original drawing. But, there are some minor mistakes I need to change, such as getting rid of a line or address or a minor hatching segment. Yet I can not delete said line or address or said hatching due to it being on the Basemap_Practice_Jen level. Anytime I try to edit anything from that level, nothing changes, despite it not being locked.

So is the best course of action to copy that entire level or to try a new technique?
