[Microstation Connect Edition 2023] georeferenced pdf when attached on wrong location

Hello fellow Bentley users,

Currently me and my colleagues are having issues with attaching a pdf (that has been made with microstation connect edition 2023] and showing the pdf at the right location in Microstation connect edition 2023.

The pdf has been made from a fence and with Ctrl + P.  The pltcfg file that is used for exporting the pdf has "Enable Georeferencing" on On (see image below).
However, when I attach the pdf in the references toolbar, for some reason the pdf is shown on a different location. See the 2nd image below. I am curious and wondering why the pdf is
georeferenced on a completely different location.

  • pdf should  only be attached  via the raster manager.

Also note that georefed pdfs are in long  lat  and  need to be reprojected when attached to easting and  northing  cgs files..

But I'm curious  why make a  pdf when you obvioulsy have  have the original survey cad file  that could  just be georefed as a  dgn via ref manger instead .. it can be clip referenced  in the active file  via fence and  would come at right coordiantes, and would be  better resolution than pdf.

  • With attach references it seems also to work. When I tried just now with the raster manager, the pdf was also on another place. Same as in the picture I have provided above. So that unfortunately didn't seem to help.

My colleagues with Microstation CE export it to pdf for colleagues that don't have microstation connect. However for testing whether the pdf was at the right location, they reattached it in MIcrostation CE before giving it to the colleagues who don't have Microstation CE. Then they discovered that the pdf was at a completely different place.

In regards to repojecting. Do you have an idea how I can do that in Microstation CE directly during the export so the user gets the pdf with the right coordinates. In microstation the x en y is already on the right place, so I would assume that during the export the pdf would already have the right coordinates.

  • Attach PDF using the regular reference manager only seems to work. there are a lot of issues that happen when the PDF is not attached through the Raster Manager. While this may not be related to that, you will encounter other problems if you try to attach a PDF as a "regular" reference file.

Do you have any way to examine the PDF itself, perhaps in BlueBeam or Adobe, to ensure that the coordinate system was applied and saved properly?

If nothing else, you can file a Service Ticket with Bentley support to have one of their technicians help you sort out the problem.

    1. you say export  to pdf  .. Don't  you mean print to pdf? Can you  check original dgn has a   CGS  ( datum set  in it ,  if not will never  create  a geo ref for pdf )

    2.  what  do your colleagues use instead of  microstation to attach the pdf in the right  location?

3 if they are using autocad or  civil 3d then you should be able to just convert / export the  original survey  in microstation CE to in autocad DWG with the  right datum cgs set in the dgn first and they can use it as  a DWG xref no problem.. fonts and  linestyles  could be an issue.

    4. then its up to your colleagues to attach the DWG as an xref..

    5. In the last few  years Autocad has been able to xref  DGN's directly as dgn  ( can be done to check location) but I believe they cannot  change the symbology or colours..  In the past I used to just  make a new copy and  make them all grey and  use the acad colour table just to be sure.. never got negative feedback from them

  • Dear Lorys,
I have used now the right coordinate system. There were several for the netherlands 28992 and I  originally just chose one from the list. When I chose another one that was similar then it worked somehow. So now it works.

    So tip 1 helped me.
