Why "SNAP" in Microstion doesnt work (after conversion DWG to DGN)

When converting a drawing in Acad from DWG to DGN V7 and then opening it in Micorstation 8, snaps do not work/are not transferred. They cannot grab the individual lines and transfer them to their GIS to the places according to the coordinates where they are drawn in Acad.
Can this be solved by the settings in Acad?

  • OK, How are you converting these drawings to V7? Can you tell me what software you are using for that, and walk me through it step by step?

My recommendation might be to open the DWG through MicroStation V8, which can directly open DWG 2014 and earlier (depending on version). Then Save As DGN V7 from MicroStation.

  • Whne I wrote ACAD, I mean autoacad 21.
Upon further analysis, I found out that the error occurs when converting to DGN in autocad.
I tried to convert the DWG drawing created by me in autoacad to DGN in another program. Here, the SNAP after opening in microstation was functional.
So it's not the autoacad drawing settings or the drawing method itself.
For the conversion, I use the available 2D autocad templates, namely V7-Metric-Seed2D.
I personally do not have microstation at my disposal. The company that requires DGN V7 uses version microstation V7/J.

Sorry but this contradicts what your saying  .. you get a  problem if you use acad for the conversion, you dont get a  problem if you use 3rd party not acad to do conversion.. hence  by  my logic its acad that introduces the  problem  either keep using the 3rd party or ask autodesk why its not working  in addition I suggest you  post  3 files here

Create a new simple dwg ie a single simple line in ACAD  post a  copy  here

convert this dwg with ACAD post copy here

Convert a copy with your third part ( please tell us what its called)  and  post copy here

Now  meanwhile see if you  can down load  free or trial Bentley view  and try  it to check your converted file...

you also have to accept the conversions  between formats are never 100 % perfect ie fonts  line styles dimensioning styles etc but  a line  should stay a line... your original post talks of  GIS  being used by client.. Can you find out what the gis  product is and what  other  formats can be accepted.. alot  of GIS even if its very old can accept DXF or  you can dumb down your dwg export  to oldest possible dwg , ask what is the  newest DWG client can accept DWG  rather than dgn..  if they really need dgn v7 they can also import DWG or DXF and export to dgn  through GIS much better than you can in acad....I used to do this alot in old Mapinfo (gis  product) all the time through their universal translator.. If they have ESRI then you shouldnt have to convert  as esri can import  / export almost anything...

If you  have to do what they want  and  cant buy microstation .. then you may have to buy something  like Global mapper ( a very inexpensive  GIS package) you import the DWG and  export the data to whatever the client wants as GIS format .. I don't  have access to microstation or global mapper anymore but somebody here can test your files if you  post them.

If you  do this alot you could  hire a contractor to fix your data  remotely with their microstation ie force the snappable  option it should be very  inexpensive as  it would be a batch process so only a few cents  per drawing as user really doesnt have to do anything much just build run a batch script.

  • AutoCAD honestly does not do a good job translating DGN files.

Since you are using AutoCAD (not MicroStation) we can't help you. You will need to go to the AutoCAD support forums for help with AutoCAD. If you were actually using MicroStation, we may be able to help troubleshoot, but we cannot help you with AutoCAD. You need to go ask the AutoCAD people for the help you need with their software.
