[V8i] Graphics Display Problem

In the past, opening large scale dgn file, it can display drawing correctly although it was forced to switch into Software Graphics. After adding RAM to the computer, mstn has nothing to show but the element are still "appear" in the black screen. You can also select them but you would never know where they are. May be an attached PNG file would help you understand what i said.

[Remark: It displays well when opening normal small dgn file]

  • Without access to the DGN, I can't say for sure, but it seems like a bug if the exact same file displays normally in D9 with the same view, settings, etc. Does this happen on every large scale DGN in Software Graphics or only on this DGN? Does it happen on every machine that switches to Software Graphics? You can force Software Graphics mode on any machine by setting QV_D3DVERSION=0 in your environment before running MicroStation. That way you could test the same DGN (same view, settings, etc.) somewhere else. If you try that, be sure to delete the variable from your environment afterwards.

    Thanks,

  • Sorry for late reply because I need to test (different time zone) before answer your question. I dare not say it happens on every large scale DGN. But I'm sure once the large scale dgn corrupt the mstn, then open the other small scale dgn file, mstn would still not function properly (in black screen) unless you shutdown the whole application.

    I did a test on setting QV_D3DVERSION :

when the value is 0, mstn has no black screen.when the value is 9, mstn goes into black screen (both D9 or Software Graphics).when it is not set, mstn goes into black screen(both D9 or Software Graphics).

I guess to say this means your auto-switching function to Software Graphics cannot works.

  • When you say "(both D9 or Software Graphics)", are you saying that you get the black screen with D9 graphics *before* the switch to Software Graphics as well as after the switch?

The last two cases (value of 9 and not set) will be the same since D9 graphics will automatically be chosen for Win XP, so that's good that the results are the same.

And the black screen only happens on a large scale DGN, and only after you added more RAM to the machine, and once it gets in this black screen state it stays there until you restart MicroStation. Correct?

We will look into the switching mechanism.

    Thanks,

    Russell

  • Sorry for reading my poor English grammar.

    Yes.

Yes, black screen only happens on a very large scale DGN. But I'm not sure if the problem is due to RAM.

    Correct.

  • clever Anthony, may be the problem is due to your ati GPU limitation, you need a better GPU with bigger frame buffer memory, usually I would recommend you nVidia Qudadro series(K4000 comes with 3GB memory, for example) and its latest Quadro desktop driver.
