Again, sorry for the n00b questions.
V8i Select Series 2, Win 7 x64
Working on drawings not done in our office, some of the files have custom line styles (which we don't have and so are missing), I assumed I could just "create them". The lines are form mechanical such as --HWS-- and --CWS-- (etc), I have no idea how to do this. I can do this in AutoCAD, but the line style editor, component-sub component thing is hard to understand. I tried to follow the help files, and I could "add a new component" but don't know how to define it. I am certain I'm not even close.
Is this something I can do? Do I edit a specific line style library or do I create a new one? And if a new one, how do I load it?
Thanks in advance for any help/advice/info you can give me.
You can do it in AutoCAD and then import that .lin file into Microstation's line style editor. But yet, why not request the appropriate .rsc line style file from the firm who created the drawings?
Microstation CONNECT 10.17.00.209
ORD CONNECT 2021 R1 10.10.1.3
Microstation v8i SS 10 08.11.09.919
Power InRoads v8i 08.11.09.615
ProjectWise 10.0.3.453
If I do it in AutoCAD and import it, does it become a Microstation Line Style or is it an imported AutoCAD one? In other words, it needs to be "native microstation" for the most part.
I'll give it a try to see how it goes, I may have questions.
As far as getting the .rsc file, not sure if it's possible but I can ask. I was hoping there was an easy Microstation way to do this within the files I'm working with.
Thanks
First try to get the resource (.rsc) from whoever gave you the file.
Once you get the Line Style resource with the Custom Line Style definition. Place it where M-Sta is looking for those resources (MS_SYMBRSRC)
If they don't want to give it to you. ask them to drop the line style into line work That way you see EXACTLY what they see.
If that's not possible I suggest you create a Linear Pattern and Pattern the line. That's easier for a beginner than creating Custom Line Styles plus you don't need the Resource available for the Line Style to display correctly.
Don't use actual Text in the Custom Lin Style Symbol or in the Cell you use when doing Linear Patterning.
Drop the Text into line work/shapes that look like the text. this is because if you use a particular font for the Text in the Line Style, the Font may not always be available and then the text would not display correctly.
Create a Symbol that has the line work (that looks like text) and justify the Symbol according to where you plan it to display in the Line Style.
I Hope This Helps Someone Reading This! (Intergraph>PseudoStation>MicroStation user since 1980's)

I create these types of lines via a .LIN and import it. .LIN is much quicker and simpler to edit and update. Once imported they reside in the file. One thing you must do is have a text style defined before import them.
Thanks everyone.
As George suggested, I am asking for the .rsc file but I'm not holding my breath. The .lin suggestion worked great and that's what I will do if I cant get the resource file. I have already tried it and it works great, with a text style named "standard" (Acad default) and it automatically created the style in Microstation. I just needed to assign a Bentley font to it. There is an issue with the spacing though, if I end up using this method, I will need to tweak the .lin code to space the text apart some. Any one ever have that issue?
