Custom line styles with text.. how do you create them?

Again, sorry for the n00b questions.

V8i Select Series 2, Win 7 x64

Working on drawings not done in our office, some of the files have custom line styles (which we don't have and so are missing), I assumed I could just "create them". The lines are form mechanical such as --HWS-- and --CWS-- (etc), I have no idea how to do this. I can do this in AutoCAD, but the line style editor, component-sub component thing is hard to understand. I tried to follow the help files, and I could "add a new component" but don't know how to define it. I am certain I'm not even close.

Is this something I can do? Do I edit a specific line style library or do I create a new one? And if a new one, how do I load it?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice/info you can give me.

  • I am finding that a basic linestyle is fairly simple just awkward.

    Open the Editor

    Create a Named Style

Create a line formed of dashes and gaps.  Start with a gap and end with a dash

These are set by MU (Master Units)  if you want a dash that is 12" and a gap of 2" your dash is 1 and your gap is .083333333

Save and look at your line

nNow grow the line 1' Dash 2" gap 4" Dash and 2" gap

Save and probably close the file and open and you will see your new line

    Now create a Point

Draw a symbol - either use a common TT Font (4" in size) or draw with sticks

Treat line a cell - Place origin on cell and save

Now attach your linestryle to this point

Click on the 4" dash and attach the cell

Now make sure your Linestyle name you first created is associated with the New linestyle/

    Save and reopen

    You are done.

Only create one linestyle per .rsc file.  to easy to lose work until you know what you are doing.

  • Sample ASCII.txt file (Next 2 lines)

    *Text, TextTest  --T---T---T--

    A,0.35,-.1,["T",LT_Style,S=.06,U=0,x=-.042,y=-.024],-.1

    Each style has 2 lines.

    First line is *Name, Description

    Second line

A    is Type of line (Use type A),

0.35   is DASH (Starting and Ending Dash Length),

-.1   is  GAP (negatives are gap)

[  ]    is Text or Symbol parameters

"T"   is Text String used in the line

    LT_Style   is Text Style

    S=.06    is  Scale

    U=0   is Upright Rotation Angle

x=-.042   is  X Offset (from end of previous gap stroke)

y=-.024   is  Y Offset (from end of previous gap stroke)

    -.1  is GAP stroke again

There is no ending stroke.  Start stroke and end stroke are the same.

To modify edit in notepad, save, re-import into DGN.

You can have multiple  linetypes in a .txt file and pick the ones you want to import.

Note:  Autodesk supports UNICODE characters however MicroStation will not import them from .lin properly it will however allow them to be copied from a DWG file.

More details on Autodesk site.  Search for "Linetype"

    Edit.

    To import or update

    Element>Line Styles>Edit

    File>Import>AutoCAD Line Style File (LIN)...

  • David for the sake of others can you detail the steps to do this ..LIN import .

BTW I used to know how to create these simple ones in autocad via note pad but I have forgotten...

I'll have to google autodesk , line style, notepad...

  • There's a video that shows you how to create a custom line style with text that I think will be very helpful to you.

  • Thanks everyone.

As George suggested, I am asking for the .rsc file but I'm not holding my breath. The .lin suggestion worked great and that's what I will do if I cant get the resource file. I have already tried it and it works great, with a text style named "standard" (Acad default) and it automatically created the style in Microstation. I just needed to assign a Bentley font to it. There is an issue with the spacing though, if I end up using this method, I will need to tweak the .lin code to space the text apart some. Any one ever have that issue?
