Within MicroStation v8i (SELECTSeries 3) (version 08.11.09.397), where are the area unit defined? The linear units are defined in the unit.def file, but this file does not include area units.
AreaAnnotator is freeware for MicroStation.
AreaAnnotator works with MicroStation tags to measure objects automatically. One of the ways you can configure it is to apply a scale factor to measurements to calculate values in units other than MicroStation master/sub units.
So, if your DGN units are metres and you want areas shown in hectares, or if your master units are feet and you want areas shown in acres, then it's straightforward.

Thank you for the feedback, but within the Measure Area command, there is an Area Unit pulldown that contains "Square sf, Square m, Hectare". I would like to add "acre" to this pulldown, if possible.
Most of the tools within Microstation that use a pulldown list to select the Units use the "units.def" file supplied within the default workspace;
C:\ProgramData\Bentley\MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries)\WorkSpace\System\data\units.def
Unfortunately, the Measure Area tool has the units defined in the Area Unit pulldown hardcoded and have been based on the Working Units in your design file.
eg. If Working Units are Metres / Centimetres the Area Units are "Square m" and "Hectare" If Working Units are US Survey Feet / Inches the Area Units are "Square sf".
This would mean that whichever Working Units you have defined within your files would display different Area Units.
Change Request # 270468 has previously been raised to add the ability to select which units are available. Possibly also using the units.def file like the other pulldown lists similar to the Perimeter Unit pulldown within this same tool.
I would suggest raising your own Change Request via the online Service Request Manager. Please make mention of this BE Community Forum as well as the Change Request number already raised.

Are your master units set to "survey feet" ? There has been a report filed for this issue (#8650)

Yes, the units are in "survey feet". I guess that I can assume that if the units were in "US feet" that acres would be an option, but with "survey feet" there isn't an equivalent area unit.
