Within MicroStation v8i (SELECTSeries 3) (version 08.11.09.397), where are the area unit defined? The linear units are defined in the unit.def file, but this file does not include area units.
Are your master units set to "survey feet" ? There has been a report filed for this issue (#8650)

Yes, the units are in "survey feet". I guess that I can assume that if the units were in "US feet" that acres would be an option, but with "survey feet" there isn't an equivalent area unit.
