Here's a 21st century VBA line labeller.
It's freeware and should work with both MicroStation CONNECT and MicroStation V8i.

Your wish is granted...
What's more, it labels shapes as well...

The updated macro lets you place the label unrotated, rotated to match the element or rotated by view.

Great. Could it honor segment orientation also?
Please explain 'segment orientation'. Keep in mind that this is freeware, and the revenue from freeware doesn't fund product development.
The VBA project is supplied with full source code. You are at liberty to copy and modify it to your requirements.
aligned to segment. Like place text above/below tool.

Directly no but indirectly yes as it links to your page and services.
This is gold! Appreciate it Jon! Speaking of VBA, is there a link for newbies to learn from?
There is a dedicated Programming forum, including VBA assistance. There are also a couple of courses on the Bentley Learn Server.
Jon's LA Solutions website is a treasure trove of articles and examples.
The Wiki page for VBA programming also has quite a few examples.
And unlike a lot of programming documentation, the MVBA Help file is fairly verbose, with reasonable descriptions and examples.I believe it will be found in the program root directory - look for MicrostationVBA.chmFor example, in my OpenRoads Designer, I find that file in C:\Program Files\Bentley\OpenRoads Designer CONNECT Edition\OpenRoadsDesigner\In my MicroStation SS10, I find the file in C:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley\MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries)\MicroStation

MaryB covered most of it.
I'll add that MicroStation VBA uses the Microsoft VBA development kit. Other apps use the same kit to develop custom implementations of VBA. For example, the Microsoft Office components include VBA. There is plenty of information and examples about Excel VBA. Each implementation of VBA has extensions for its host app. Excel VBA has extensions that cover worksheets, ranges and cells. MicroStation VBA has extensions that cover DGN elements and 3D geometry.
There was a VBA book published by Bentley Systems, but it appears to be out of print. Kevin van Haaren suggests that an eBook may be available.
Hey John, thanks for the VBA. The link on your page to the VBA book does not work. Also, it appears that Bentley is now offering the book as a free ebook.
I don't have a good link to a page just about the vba book but I went here:
https://education.bentley.com/Resources
Went to the ebook section and clicked "See More" until it showed up. That tile has a link to "Read ebook" that downloads an epub version of the book. My link to the ebook is below but I'm not sure if it's generated uniquely for each visitor or not.
Read eBook
I typically read epubs on my iPad where I use Apple's Books app. There should be a way to convert this for a Kindle as well. If anyone has recommendations for reading epubs on Windows I'd love to hear it.

Kevin there are lots of free convertors for epub to Kindle, google will find one for you .. The best I've found that is free is the one I use "Calibre" it can import /export / convert just about anything ebook related file and it helps keep track of all your ebook libraries and can transfer to ereaders .. my Calibre is for Windows pc. This will convert epub to kindle no problem..as long as there is not DRM copy protection..It too has a built in reader but not as good as a dedicated ereader hardware etc
You can also use adobe digital editions you can just read and use epubs as is on your pc... I prefer Kobi and Kindle ereaders for portability and Adobe digital editions can do transfer from pc to ereader too also works with pdf versions but not all ereaders can handle pdfs well... the is also a kindle pc an e reader software (free) from Amazon kindle...
