Using MicroStation V8i Select Series 2 08.11.07.443 running on Windows 7 64-bit machine with 16 GB or memory.
Experiencing slowness when opening certain DGN files on the network. The dgn files average size is around 5 MB and there are reference files attached from network. User experience slowness with cursor movement and when clicking on certain menu items.
What are some things that can be check to see what may be causing the problem?
There are number of things that could be causing performance issues when opening DGN files, especially across a network location. Try these few suggestions:
1. Try copying the file that you are experiencing the slowness in locally on the hard drive. Try opening same file.
-If slowness still exist
2. Try copying the reference files to the same folder that the DGN locally as well.
3. Verify that this is a file-specific issue by creating a new file and gradually attach each reference to see if same slow performance occurs.
4. If problem still exist, try opening files in a generic workspace i.e. "Untitled" with no project configuration file using the "default" interface. If this workspace is already be used and the problem is occurring in this generic workspace create a new workspace and test the performance of MicroStation.
Hi Regie,
This should have nothing to do with "opening" a file--just using a file. At one point (not confirmed if in newer versions) having the "status" column showing in the Reference Dialog box caused slowness on a Novell network.

Hi Regie, have you checked by any chance if they are storing their .upf files on the network? That can cause similar behaviour. Also does disabling the references "locate" and "snap" option make any difference?
Regie,
I did place the files on my local drive and I am still experiencing slowness
I ran into something similar at a client site where they renamed the server storing their standards files. The culprit was the cell library. The saved cell library attachment was no longer valid. After reattaching the cell library from the new location and doing a File > Save Settings the slow opening problem went away.
