Levels levels levels

I have a converted dwg  to dgn file utilizing model and sheet. I can't believe the amount of locations that it's possible to change a reference level's display properties, not to mention the fact the process is multiplied by 2 for on/off state changes. I'm completely overwhelmed.

I realize the initial creator of the file is mostly to blame but could someone help me get a handle on this? I'd like to control all the levels in one location. Additionally, I can't seem to find a setting to hold the level settings so they all revert after open/close. (dwg visretain=1 already??)

Is your question related to the default Microstation Level display  mechanism or DWG related, only.

Are you familar with the " default Microstation Level display  mechanism"?

For DGN files your have three "Level display methods" (see the Level Display Tool)

    1. DISPLAY ON/OFF Level per View (not DWG compatiblel, but Microstation Default, for SAVE AS DWG see the DWG-Options)

    2. GLOBAL DISPLAY  ON/OFF Level (DWG compatible)

    3. GLOBAL FREEZE LEVEL ON/OFF (DWG compatible)

    and

    4. for Reference attachments there is a GLOBAL/ON OFF

Indeed a Reference Attachment may have a level assingment in an DGN-Model like in AutocAD (DWG)

You may not use "file/Save settings" to revert you level settings after reopening your dgn file. Better try to use
"SAVED VIEWS" for different Level settings and reusing them.

  • thanks for the detailed response. I'm familiar with the level display mechanism in your first screenshot. however it doesn't seem to be working the way I interpret it.

My files and ref files are dgns but i'm unable to freeze a level globally (it only does it in model but the sheet ref level remain on) if I try and freeze a ref level in a sheet ref (viewport) I get a warning saying I can't do it there.

    ref level overrides are on.

I'm not sure what you are saying in the last sentence but levels seem to be maintaining their settings after save/close now. (not sure what I did)

  • Spear- did you ever get this resolve?  I'm having trouble trying to keep certain levels on in my sheet after Save setting and closing it.  when i reopen file it the levels are off again.

  • Cause it's an F ing cluster mess. Try (temporarily) forgetting everything you know about level manipulation in Microstation. Then re-learn from AutoCad concepts. There is no such thing as a Viewport, Microstation sheets use reference files, not viewports. The entire Viewport concept is where we get tripped up, similar, but different. I always hate it when I have to work a project in DWG format, but it's rare.

  • found a solution that works for me:

    sheet view- level override ON

ref file - Display Overrides: ALWAYS

level Display - set levels on/off

  •  Open Your Keyin dialog and enter "SET REFLEVELOVERRIDES" and take note of the setting - ON or OFF. If it is OFF, enter the same command again, except add ON to the end.

This setting is analogous to the AutoCAD VISRETAIN command, and if the value is OFF, any changes to reference levels will not be written to the file when saved.
