Reference level overrides is off.

(Posted on behalf of the user)

I'm trying to override the element symbology of an attached reference file using the level manager and it is giving me this message:

"reference level overrides is off. level change is valid only in current session. the change has not been written to file."

Where is this setting and how can i change it?  it's only happening in certain files.  Other files, I can change the symbology of reference files using the level manager override and it saves it.

  • It sounds like you are trying to change the override symbology of a level in a nested reference.

There is a setting that controls this but you may want to consider making the change to the nested reference level in the direct attachment. If you are attaching the same direct reference file with nesting, to other models/files, you can make a change to the level in the direct attachment and the change will carry through to all the models/files that this reference is attached to. This would save you from having to open every file that the reference is attached to and changing the level. You would only need to open one file and making the change and have it changed in many files.

The following steps will change the setting.

    1. In the file where you are trying to make the change, open the reference dialog box.

    2. Double click on the name of the direct attachment (the one that contains the nested attachment) to open the attachment settings dialog box.

    3. The setting “Display Overrides” needs to be set to “Always” in order for your level overrides of the nested reference to be saved.

  • No, it's not a Nested Reference File.  It's a directly attached reference file.

It must be a setting in the file the drawing is referenced to as I can't save any Reference File level overrides in this file.   I get the same message with every reference file I attach.  I have attached the reference file to other drawings and I am able to save the overrides.  This may have been an old SEED file from the dark ages that got copied over with this old project.

  • Hi,

There is a Key-in that is a per-file setting that you could try. Go to the menu Utilities > Key-in and enter the following key-in: set refleveloverrides on

Then try making a change in Level Manager to reference symbology. To retain the change for the next time the file is opened, go to File > Save Settings

    Regards,

  • I had the same issue. File that I'm working on is a converted DWG to DGN. Level Symbology override on a reference file doesn't save into the file. Usually what we do is the design is done on model then text is later added on sheet space.
    The key in worked.
I tried changing level setting on workspace>Levels>Level Attributes Auto Synch. ...to User from Project...Didn't work...

  • if the reference is refered into the model space then the model space is refed into the sheet  then in the sheet it is indeed treated as a Nested ref.. but if the model space is not using a ref then in the sheet it is not nested...

If it is not a ref file in the model space then changing the overrides in the model space view should change the way the sheet  looks.. but from your reply   you use the phrase referenced to  so we are unclear as to what your work flow is..

look at the ref manager bottom rows and set  overrides to always while your in the sheet  view model...

Try detach and reattach the ref into the sheet ... this usually  fixes the problem...
