Here are Qs after viewing the videos: (AECOsim SS4 593, opened from the Microstation icon)
Day 1 - Welcome to MicroStation - Part 1
1) In File Open, what are the Tools/File History and the Directory History buttons for, how used?
2) I understand how ‘User’ has come to mean ‘User of … whatever (e.g. ‘User of examples’), so am surprised to hear that in “many philosophies” ‘User’ can still be a person e.g. Tom (me). What kind of things would be configured in User>New>Tom, and how?
3) Although opening from the Microstation icon, User>BuildingDesigner dominates. Is it correct that, if wishing to use Building Designer, the only option is User>BuildingDesigner then e.g. Project>BuildingTemplate_NM_Full, unless I create e.g. Project>New>Tom_NM_Full? (this seems a distortion of the concept of ‘Project’). Is there any step by step guidance on creating e.g. Project>New>Tom_NM_Full, complete with necessary configuration changes?
4) If, downstream of Project>BuildingTemplate_NM_Full or Project>Tom_NM_Full, I wanted to create genuine Projects variants e.g. Project>Client A, Project>Client B, Project>Scheme 1, Project>Scheme 2, how to do that?
5) In Tasks dialog, can the topmost items 1-9 (ElemSelect, Fence … Measure) be presented not in Icon Layout Mode but in e.g. Panel Layout Mode?
Hi fostertom,
Many of these questions are related to workspaces and workspace configuration which will be covered in subsequent (more advanced) MicroStation SIGs. As for numbers 1 and 5 though here are my thoughts:
Unknown said:1) In File Open, what are the Tools/File History and the Directory History buttons for, how used?
The Tools/File History has options for you that allow you to open recent files as well as set the default seed file, compress a file, and upgrade a file to the V8 version.
The Directory History is one that I think is most likely underused but is in fact quite useful. It contains a history of the most recent folders (and their paths) that you've opened files from. This allows you to work from, and navigate to, completely separate folders quickly and easily. It is sort of like a Recent Places in Windows but specific to DGN files.
Unknown said:5) In Tasks dialog, can the topmost items 1-9 (ElemSelect, Fence … Measure) be presented not in Icon Layout Mode but in e.g. Panel Layout Mode?
This can easily be done by right-clicking anywhere on any of the icons in that toolbar (called the Main toolbar). On the right -click menu there is a Layout Mode option that allows you to change the layout from icon to Panel.
Thanks a lot, for great class (and great SIG idea overall), and for this answer. I can wait for Qs 2-4, thanks for 1 and 5 - gd new info/understanding.
I am booked in to the repeat this evening, but I think no need, so looking forward to the next.
