When changing 3D View rotation, Model goes way off screen. Model far away from 0,0,0.

My 3D model is made no where close to 0,0,0 coordinate, which creates a problem when change view rotation. So If have a top view and change to a front view (in the same window), then my model is way off in space, and it takes a bit to find my model again and zoom back in. The same problem happens if I use "RV=-90" keyin command. I know why this happens, but don't know if there is a solution, that does not require moving my model close to 0,0,0. I have a partial solution by using dynamic rotate, I first press tentative snap somewhere on my model and then rotate. This way I end up with my model still in my view window.  thanks

  • Have you looked into setting an Auxillary ACS? This may help your situation. I don't work with this myself so I can't give any suggestion on how to set it up. You can search the help files for more info.

  • Yes, I know how to do that, but don't see how that would help me.   It looks like the proximity of 0,0,0 is not a factor for my problem after all.    It's more because I have temporary construction and other junk far away from my model that creates this problem.   So my work around for now is putting all that stuff on a different level and turn it off, then when I change views the model is still in my view wiondow.  For now it's my work around solution.

I wish I could snap tentative on my model and then switch from a top view to a front view and then my model would still be in my view window, this method works with dynamic view option.

  • You can store views away (Utilities > Saved Views) to recall whenever you want it later. Then when you want the Front1, Top1, etc. just recall it. It will store Levels on/off Area of file you are looking at Active Z and Display Depth settings.

  • you could try the ISOLATE tool and then save this as a saved view.  This should only show the data that is within the isolate window

Good news: The "generic" way to control remote collections of objects is via clips. Exploit Model "things" and "more things" to see why (when in a "controlled volume" - clip thing, that is -  use a local ACS to orient local "standard" views)..

Bad news: Unfortunately Clips in Microstation are not developed (at all) with contemporary 3d work in mind. A simple test to get the gist of my meaning : can you understand in a glance what's happening in Model "more tings" and why these 2 Refs are shown that way?

Ugly news: What if I had to manage a myriad of nested combos - as is the case in real-life complex AEC projects?.

    best., Peter
