one element in two levels

Hi

I have a water distribution system drawn in microstation where all the pipes have been classified by their sizes ( by several levels). my boss wants me to add another level to the drawing which indicates the content of pipes (rather than their sizes) but he wants this two levels be linked together so that every time they make a change on let say level 1 level 2 can automatically be updated accordingly ( without manually assigning the changes). is there such an option in Microstation. If anyone can help me I will be very grateful.

Thanks

  • no you cant this is an attribute feature which is mostly done in GIS software like map info, ersi or Bentley map

But there is still a way to keep your level 1 with no need for level 2....

But the simplest way for you is to use symbology to define the contents either by colour code ie Red for Sewer, Cyan Drinkable or potable water... you can also use linestyle symbology ie potablewater  can be  a line style that looks like dash W dash and still has a defined colour and sewer dash S dash.. these then can be changed without changeing the level simply by changing the symbology attribute this then also works for pdfs, colour prints as well as black and white prints...

To change what you already have would be very easy using the csv remapping and defining a line style for each level used as long as you know what each level is for ... you may need to create several more new levels to sepparate out 300mm sewer from 300 mm gas....depends on your existing level structures....

It's not exactly clear what your boss wants.  From your description the best fit, as Lorys suggests, would be a GIS tool such as Bentley Map.

Another way to indicate the content of a pipe would be to use MicroStation tags.  You could create a tag set named, say, pipe data, and add tag definitions to that set including contents.  Then tag each pipe with that tag set and apply the relevant data.

You can read more about tags and tag sets in MicroStation help.

  • Hi Marie, unfortunately MicroStation hasn't got a functionality that can automatically modify a level to reflect some changes made to another level as levels are not linked to each other. I am also not 100% sure to understand what exactly your boss wants to do but perhaps some more advanced and specific features could be available in one of our Plant products?

I would also agree with Lorys in suggesting to use level symbology to differentiate your pipe contents.

Alternatively you could enquire our Professional Services about developing a custom application to suit your needs.

  • Hi Marie

I agree that using linestyles to differentiate between the type of content and color for pipe size will display both the contents and the pipe size at the same time.

If you want the same drawing to be able to display two different ways, pipe size or pipe content, you can try using level symbology overrides. Set the linestyle and color required for the pipe sizes using an attribute applied directly to the elements or you can use Bylevel symbology. You can then set the level override symbology for the same levels.

When you want to display the pipes according to size, you turn Level Overrides off in the View Attributes. When you want to display the pipes according to content, you turn on Level Overrides in the View Attributes. This allows you to toggle between how the pipes are displayed in the drawing. You can even open two views and have one view displaying one way and the other view displaying the opposite way.

  • You can use a multi line stacked both with offset 0.  However you are limited to lines and linestrings, no arcs
