Hey Community,
what are the difficulties of Shared Cells, compared to conventional cells ...
... today in MicroStation V8i?
... confirmed? (If you're not sure first hand, please note this)
My observations are:
any more?

Hi,
If you desire to edit the text inside a cell, you can do that with a normal cell, but not a shared cell.

No easy way to tell if they are being placed as shared or conventional.
If they were reliable I think shared should really be the default placement. Then and option of "drop to conventional" if you modify one.
For further information on shared cell issues, please find attached a link to a discussion on Editing Shared Cells:

I dont trust shared cells and in this modern era where space and file sizes is cheap and unlimited see no real benifits in shared cells over conventional cells to me they are more trouble than what they are worth.. I still remeber the trouble I got into when I edited ( not knowing it was a shared cell) and updated one cell and 600 autoupdated!
had to undo all my work prior to that to get it back to original cell contents... never forgot that pain...
I refuse to use shared cells and I wont let my users and juniors use them either...

instancing = shared cells is definitely way to go for modern design system. but it has to be under user control to avoid situation like described above ..

If you assign a cell as a Automatic Dimension Terminator it is automatically a Shared Cell. Shared Cells have the ability to be associated with elements. Element moves the Shared Cell moves.
If you use Associative Patterning It creates Shared Cell definitions. Do you want to give-up Associative Patterning?
You can select just Shared Cells in the file so you shouldn't have an issue detecting/finding them.
If you idle over a cell, Select it or manipulate it M-Sta will tell you it is a Shared Cell.
There is an option in the Drop to convert Shared Cells to Normal cells if you want.
Shared Cells are different just like Point & Graphic cells. They all have pluses and minuses depending on what you do. The different types just open your options. I'll admit I used to (and still do at times) tell my users not to turn on the "Use Shared Cells" switch but I don't want to give up the options it provides. Users just have to understand them better. That eliminates 99% of the problems.
This is just my opinion.

You could make the same argument for reference files. Why just not have 100 copies of the same floor plan... we have the disks space right why use reference files?
The problem is not the concept. The problem, as with most DWG compatibly add-ins, is poor the implantation and the tools.
The old adage still goes
Just Because You Can Doesn't Mean You Should!.
I have problems with users leaving crap in files, Naming files with spaces or long descriptive file names. Using % & and other characters in File & Directory Names. Having Long Path's etc.
Sorry, I got off Topic

That was one of my intentions to create this thread here. And I want to add: It's quite difficult to keep all data users in all projects informed how to handle shared cells.

just easier not to have them cant see any advantages...
