Is there a way to remove all of the references in a file without opening said file?
I have to remove all of the referecnes from many files and it gets annoying opeing each file, detaching the references, and the closing the file.
I searched the forums but could not find a solution to anything similiar to this issue.
Thank you!
Hi,
if you want to change a file (and reference removal is nothing else than the modification), you have to open it. The question is if it can be automated (e.g. using Batch Process). Do you need to remove all references or some specific only?
With regards,

Thanks Jan. Yes, I need to detach all the files. I figured I would have to open the file, however, I was just seeing if you MS geniuses knew some awesome trick that I didn't even know of.
Thank you

Yes, the trick is Batch Process tool. Just use the attached command file (it contains only the key-in to detach all references),add all your files to the Process dialog and start the job.

Ok, I tried the batch process and it did (almost) exactly what I needed it to do. So instead of opening 50 files, and all of the models within each file, I only have to open 1 file and run the batch process and it takes care of all the reference files. Thank you both very much for your help.
Please note that the Verified answer "Command Line Argument (-O)" is not the correct answer for this question. Opening MicroStation without the ability to open reference files is quite a bit different than removing them.
Agreed, it was more the second part of the response. I changed the verified answer to a different post to avoid confusion.
Very good, I only mentioned it for those who may search this post for an answer.
Glad Jan was able to take it from my initial response. Batch Process is a great utility to make changes to or within files. It can save an enormous amount of time but it is opening and closing files which means changing date/time on those files. Only reason I mentioned the -O option was to cover bases. You can't always tell from the initial description just what is actually needed.

Axiom has had a tool to do this, and has had one as far back as I remember (IGDS)
.
I think projectwise has a feature to do this too... been 8 years years since I ran Pwiseso cant give precise details..
but we without it would use the batch processor as we do for so many things...
