Just to clarify, you mean the amount of space between characters when placing the equation?
yes, there are a lot of amount of space between characters when placing the equation
Defect #85259 has been filed
But as a work around you can:
1. Select the OLE Object so the Edit Handles are visible
2. Select one of the edit handles to see how it is expanding, if it expands in both directions at the same time, press the ALT key to prevent the expansion from scaling.
3. This will allow the formula/ object to be able to be condensed
