MicroStation in a virtual environment

Hi,

We have an option to go with Application Virtualization at our client side .

Want to know if anybody has used MicroStation in a virtual environment .

  • DONT DO IT .. citrix is woeful  and unbelievably slow it will drive you to madness... just not worth it ...

If you only want it for non drafters read only then only allow bentley View ss3  on virtual with citrix  but if you use nested file refs it will be extreemley slow even over fast networks....

We use it only with Bentley view for non drafters I would hate to have to use full mstn and do work in it  as it is really  really slow.. even with fast latest computers .. its citrix that slows it all down....( but our IT refuses to instal Bentley View on all pc users) ....

But it is  much better to install Bentley view on all pcs ( non drafters only) for free! and let them  see drawings via the network direct...But  they then need to have the drawings drive  / folders on a read only access via privileges so they cant move or delete stuff in error or deliberately...only full access to drafters for those directories but f you can get IT on your side  via a business case it will work great...

I did this with a previous contract and was given a big fat bonus for the increased productivity Bentley view created for them...you need to run some training sessions for users but its pretty easy to use...and they soon see the benefits of self service ....engineers are like that... often the just want a print or pdf or measurement... so why not?

Agree with you. I am suffering a painful slow experience from Citrix. At the first time I thought that was LAN problem between different offices. After going to the headquarter and used it, I am very sure that Citrix is just to help you save money and installation time only.

  • Network latency is only one factor in application performance.  There are performance monitoring counters and tools in XenApp which should help in diagnosing bottlenecks.  MicroStation delivered via XenApp can be a performant application, but much depends on server farm configuration and network infrastructure.  Slowing down production is not a cost savings, so I advise you contact your XenApp admin and explain the issues you encounter.
