I don't think there is anything wrong with using them.  If I sat all day doing one thing I would probably be using them, but I don't.

......Now if Bentley had a good method of allowing users configs to be stored on an USB stick that would be a different story.  I could bring my configuration with me.  I just haven't come up with an easy way to do that....  yet.

Sorry David I didnt intend it  to sound like a flame.... I just love Fkey menus functionality and flexablity... and yes for the last few years I've have  been with the same client/ employer doing the same stuff day in day out so Fkeys help alot ...
But when I was contract drafting from place to place for   years I brought my own Fkey setup and customised  macros, mdls and vba codes begged borrowed and even bought with my own hard earned these lived on usb  drive (and before that a floppy disk) ..small thought it was then it worked for me... and as I too find it hard to remember what each F key combo does that why  I have always used a keyboard overlay for the last 20 years which I drew in mstn printed out an cut to fit the keyboard .. from time to time I rework it  or just print out a nice fresh copy ... I even have a generic default one for my fellow users which I give out and let them rework it  to suit or not its up to them... but for me I'd be lost with out it... hence the back up on my usb .. and network too.... and a copy at home!

There is a short cut extension ...

I think you mean a command-line switch.  You can modify a shortcut to include one or more switches.

This article about MicroStation Command Line Switches tells more.

  • I don't think there is anything wrong with using them.  If I sat all day doing one thing I would probably be using them, but I don't.

In my case I use my function keys mainly for OS based operations, not application based operations.  I have 3 VM's XP, Win 7, Win 8 + Bootcamp add to that various versions of MS to match client configurations.   Its just not cost effective for me to try constantly maintain (and remember) a bunch of custom function key configurations.   Additionally if I'm required to do work on site reliance on a custom configuration can be a handicap.  It's hard enough dealing with all the configuration variation you and have with vanilla MicroStation let alone sorting out custom ones.

Now if Bentley had a good method of allowing users configs to be stored on an USB stick that would be a different story.  I could bring my configuration with me.  I just haven't come up with an easy way to do that....  yet.

@mwlong.  Very true, however I do not like custom configurations or using function keys :-)

    You must be jokingI

The Function key  menus customisation is the most productive most greatest advantage that mstn has over most other products.. last time I looked at  acad they still couldnt do it but that was 3-4 years ago...

When I see a user who doesnt customise  or at least use factory F keys I see a drafter wuth one hand tied behind their back...

I love F keys  menus I have lots of them.....

I have a funkey.mnu every day work  plus other ones ones for special projects  or other disciplines like electrical which I dont do often .. this makes me very productive and fast drafter...

  • As suggested -  Turn off all is better than open Ref dialog and turn off by selecting.

    Thanks mwlong.
