Say you have a .dgn that has 30 reference files attached, but the 30th reference file has a slot number of 40. So you have detached some reference files in the past that have left some slots open. Is there a way (without manually renaming each slot past the first empt slot number) to move all the reference files up to fill the empty slot numbers?

Why do you want to change the slot numbers?
It's not so much that I want to change slot numbers as it is, when I attach multiple references at once, I want them to all be together in the reference dialog list. If I have slot numbers that aren't filled my multiple references fill those first and will not be together in the list (sorted by slot number).
It'd really be nice if you could select the reference files you wanted to "compress slot #" on. That way if you had some references that you wanted to remain untouched (say you numbered them 100 and above to keep them at the bottom) you could.

That would indeed be nice.
I filed an idea a while ago that is connected to this issue here: communities.bentley.com/.../add-pos-field-in-reference-attachment-window
but what if the settings order is set with the old numbers and names differently to what the slot number order is ie 40 being at the top and 2 being at the bottom of the settings order list and in ref manager we have the order
2, 4 5, 19, 21,40, what happens to the settings order if we rename the slots manually to 1,2,3,4,5,6
hmm looks like a nice job for vba experts out there...

It appears Enhancement # 86941 is still listed for investigation as an inclusion for this concept. If you are interested it may be worth voting for it in the Idea that was raised or you could raise a new Service Request which can also be linked to it.

Perhaps not only purge slot numbers to make them consecutive. What about renaming a selection of references and make 'm start from number X and up.For instance: slot numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6 are in use. Select refs 3,4,5 and have those renumbered starting from 20. Now you have slot numbers 1,2,6,20,21,22.So that's not consecutive but the other way around. And let's not gray out stuff when refs are sorted other then by slot. Just use relevant options. Renumber by slot, by Logical Name, by Desricption, or any column you right clicked in to start renumbering.

Good idea! Why not post it to the Ideas Forum?

I was actually hoping Andrew Bell or Reginald Wallace would add it to the allready existing Enhancement # 86941.

Is there any way to find out what Enhancement # 86941 is and what its status is. Or to comment on the Enhancement? Is there some list of Enhancements we can query ? This has probably been asked before so theree must be a simple answer.
You can add further comments/suggestions on the behaviour required in the associated Idea to ensure these are captured and viewed by others as with other Ideas:

Alternatively or in addition, you could file a Service Request (SR) and ask it to be linked to Enhancement 86941, so you can request additional information via SR and be updated. This particular Enhancement is still open for review at this time.
