Is there a way to place text along element on a 3d model in the horizontal plain rather then having to place the text
along and element in a plan view and then having to rotate each letter in the horizontal direction so that I can cut
the solid element so that is looks like it was engraved.
did you try the stencil tool ?
for the horizontal create a toroid ( donut) surface and use the stencil tool ( looks like a stamp) or try to drape the 2d text onto it..
For it to look like engraving vertical plane I think you need to turn the text into 3d objects and use the stencil or subtract from solid... 3d not my strong suit but this should get you started on solution....

look at the help it projects a 2d element onto a 3d surface...
From the Help File:
To Create a Stencil from Selected Elements
Select the Stencil 2D Elements on 3D Geometry tool in the Populate toolbox (Tools > Visualization > Populate).
Click the Stencil selected elements icon.
Click an element to select it
(Optional) To select more than one elements, press <Ctrl> and select the elements.
Enter a data point.
Once the stencil is created, a message appears in the Message Center saying that the display is complete.
Thank you,
