Only when someone ask me to do 3d models I use 3d seed files. Then I use references from the 2d project that I previously made or that someone gave to me.

I have to say that it's a bit strange to do everything in 2d inside a 3d seed, and you to say that you have to recreate things because of your partners. You can always import textstyles, dimstyles, saved views and references to your 3d seed file or your 2d file... Remember that when you have a 2d drawing (plan, section or anything else in 2d) inside a 3d seed file and if you extrude or change z value of any element you have to start to have very careful on the looks of your output drawing.

RE: Why my CADD is better than AuoCAD

Yeah, but we have drawings such as electrical schematics, control flow diagrams and piping and instrument diagrams (and note the word diagrams) that will NEVER be utilized in a 3D world, and designer/drafters who have been doing this type of work for their entire careers. Throw them into a 3D design, and chaos ensues.

RE: Why my CADD is better than AuoCAD

I always draw in 3D - even for a 2D drawing. Never know when I may need to convert something I thought was going to be 2D into a 3D drawing. Clients, Engineers, Architects, blah blah are a goofy bunch and change their mind on the fly. I need to be ready for that. Doing everything in 3D helps prevent having to go back & recreate things because of their constant decision changing. Particularly given the fact that the Microstation version I use does not allow a model to switch back & forth. I don't know if it has changed in SS3, but I can't do that in SS2. This will cause tons of work if I have saved views, references, etc of something and the boss decides he wants it in 3D instead.

Being a quality designer, drawing 2D objects in 3D without mistakes is second nature and I barely even think about it. One problem is many people in todays Design world can not even think in 3D. I get that Bently must cator to these people, but I am not one of them. The nice thing is that coming from AutoCAD after 18 years to this, at least the general manipulation of 3D Views and moving around works pretty much the same in both programs, so this piece of my transition anyway was pretty simple.

RE: Why my CADD is better than AuoCAD

Are you saying that you prefer 3d files even when you have to do only 2d drawings?
Not CAD but related. ProjectWise, ProjectWise, ProjectWise

DGNLIB is all you need to say but...add ProjectWise managed workspaces, no contest

Accudraw is a gem, probably the best productivity tool in MS

MS reference files are much better than ACAD, add dynamic views/hypermodels and again it is no contest

Multiple models and the use of a drawing model is much better designed

Speed, MS runs on half the horse power of my AutoCAD machine and is still faster

A CAD format that does not change every four years, priceless

Design history is probably not used enough but very powerful

Project Explorer is probably not used enough

Undo view vs. undo element

Interoperability is better in MicroStation. Ability to use either format is much more functional

If I wan't under NDA, I would go wild about the upcoming release...sorry for the teaser but good stuff is coming...

RE: Why my CADD is better than AuoCAD

" For some reason, a lot of users dont even know how to move the camera to eye level and look around. "

I don't think your users know Rhino very well.

yea, I am a Mstn dinosaur as well and have my own set of Function keys. I have even worked on Mstn using a puck on the old intergraph machines. I used ACAD for six years solid and can say that I am still a bit faster with Mstn with function keys. I think the problem is that you will never be able to cover all the keys you need... even with a gamepad or leap motion sensor or whatever.

Mstn has got quite a number of input options. Icons, aliases, keyins, even the old digitizer/puck interface which has been resurrected as Screen Menus. The key I suppose is to make the each input option the best it can be, which probably means some hybrid working.
