Microstation To Find Line Or Arc Of Best Fit.

Hi all

I have a problem which I was hoping someone could help with.

I have entered approx 40 x, y, z co-ordinates into microstation using the XYZ text tool box.

What I would like to do is get microstation to find either a line of best fit or an arc of best fit by selecting a series of points. Once the line/arc has been created I want to know how far away the points are from the line or arc.

After browsing the functionality I have struggled to come up with anything. I am currently using Microstation Select Series 2.

Can anyone help?

(I’m a bit dense so screen shots will help a great deal. Lol)

Thanks

  • What I would like to do is get microstation to find either a line of best fit ...

After the tsunami of demand for a regression analysis tool (we're stuck at 3 requests in 9 months), we've written a prototype MDL application.  The MDL regression analyser tries to extract either a line of best fit or circle of best fit to a number of points.

We've developed a prototype application Regression.ma.  It works with a set of points in 2D or 3D.  In 3D the points need be only approximately planar — the tool calculates a plane for analysis.

Currently, you can best-fit a line or circle to your points.  You can also wrap them in a convex hull.  Read more about our Regression Analyser and download for evaluation, visit our web site.

  • Hi Jon,

I'm really looking forward to checking out what you've done but I'm having trouble with the install file. I've tried installing the setup file from the LA Solutions page on two different computers and the installer seems to be doubling up the drive letter. It doesn't matter if I use the default file path or I browse to a location, the file ends up with C:\C:\ at the beginning.

In an attempt to answer Budlites question, our application for this MDL is to be able to turn survey points into useful geometry. Our workflow requires accuracy and a set of tools like these enable an accurate and reliable way to calculate a circle or line of best fit. Eyeballing circles of best fit might be "close enough" when you have points around the complete perimeter of a perfectly circular object but anyone that tells you that they can accurately and consistantly eyeball a circle of best fit through a quadrant or even semicircle of a roughly circular shape is pulling your leg!

    Cheers,

Thanks for the feedback.  We found the problem with the installer.

The application has been updated.  It now works in both 2D and 3D.  In 3D, it computes a plane and flattens your points to that plane prior to analysis.  It computes a line, circle or convex hull from your points.

You can download the updated installation here:

We've ported the prototype MDL application, written for MicroStation V8i, to MicroStation CONNECT.  The CONNECT regression analyser tries to extract either a line of best fit or circle of best fit to a number of points.
