Virtual Environment

We are considering moving our CADD and engineering data from a physical server to a virtual host,  I was wondering if anyone else has their data virtualized and provide any comments.

Since we are just storing data on the virtual side, I don't foresee any real issues, but I just wanted to confirm.

Thanks in Advance

Why?  What is the perceived benefit?

Has the  IT department (who presumably want to go virtual) done their homework: what is the performance  degradation that results from moving to a virtual server?

Without knowing your current server operating system, the proposed operating system, and the proposed virtual server, anything we write is no more than speculation.

  • Thanks for the response.  In general we're looking at several factors; manageability, portability, just to name a few.  I have been assured that performance is not an issue.  Most of our data is virtual already except the CADD and engineering stuff and the servers are all Windows servers.  We currently have a single windows server that stores JUST the CADD and Engineering data.  Most other non-design related data is virtual and managed with VMware.  The benefit of going virtual is to easily move data from one resource to another if the original resource needs to be maintained, replaced, etc... with little or no production time lost.  So basically if the a virtual host goes down or is not operating properly, we can move our design data to another host without the end user knowing.  That how is was described to me anyways....

  • dont do it the poor performance will drive you mad!

Store your drgs on the Network by all means but not the software were not talking MS office its CAD !

  • We're just talking about storing data on the VM not the software, all software will continue to be run locally.  If that's what you mean
