I'm trying to create a linetype that looks like this:
.... .... .... ....
I'm not having any luck by going to element -> linestyles , and trying to create in there. Any advice on this situation?
Thanks
Create a file in notepad with a .lin extension. Then import via Line Style Edit> file import
Should be something like this.
*MyLine, MyLine .... .... ....
A,0.01,-0.01,0.01,-0.01,0.01,-0.01,0.01,-0.08
Search Autocads online help for more details on line types.
If you are referring to creating a custom linestyle in a MicroStation ilnestyle resource file please refer to the two following links:

Regie,
I tried those, I don't want text in my linetype. I just need a dashed linetype with the dotted style.
I created a new resource fileCreated a Stroke in it and called it "4Dash-Gap8"After adding the Dashes and Gap for the Stroke (Below)I created a name called "4Dash-8Gap"Then I "Saved" the resource file.
I guessed at spacing!
I added 4 Dashes at 1 with 3 Gaps of 1, Plus a spacing Gap of 8Made them all "Variable" andMade the Dashes Width "Full" (for flexibility)

why cant line styles by like creating cells old school way ie draw what you want it to look like 1:1 , put origin at one end and put a fence around it "load the create line types pallet icon ( yet to be made tool) "and press create and boom done!
been waiting for this for 20+ years .... yes please we can have it for simple line styles and keep the current one for really complex ones keep everyone happy otherwise for now its just easier to use the autocad lin workaround approach...

You can do this now.
Draw a line and place the pattern along the line using the "Linear Pattern" tool
Lorys: I totally agree - something need to be done about the atrocious linestyle creator/editor.
MickyKom: "Linear Patterns" - shudder!
As MickeyKom said you can do this now with Linear Patterning and that's very easy for any beginner to understand. just create the line work, create a cell from it and use it in the Linear Patterning tool.
I realize that creating Custom Line Styles is not simple. But then again they are so flexible and can be so complex with the ability to create symbols with filled areas, and different colors and Line Codes, parallel lines of different types/weights, shifting & modification of dash & gap scales dash widths, 3D Line Styles, etc., etc., etc., etc.. What features do you want to remove to make it simple? I would hope none! If you want simple just use the Linear Patterning with a cell.
The Line Style I created for southpawj05 took a couple of minutes to create. It would have looked the same if you had created a cell and used that but you would loose some of the flexibility of the Custom Line Style. Like anything else the more flexibility the harder it is to create or learn to create. You just have to invest the time to learn and once you learn you have to reinforce it by doing it as often as you can or you will loose it. Everyone builds their knowledge upon what they already know so creating the line Style using the .lin (ASCII) way works OK too. but if you want other abilities (i.e. parallel line work, etc.) you have to learn the tool. You didn't learn how to drive a car safely in an hour or a day. I'm still trying to invest the time to learn Dimension Driven Cells which seems to be somewhat similar to the Dynamic Blocks in A-CAD (but not quite!).
Sorry for the rant! Just my 2¢ !

Its just the interface to build them is sooooo bad. Its probably great if your a professional line style builder. If your not using it once a week its a pain to figure out. Its this Deja vu nightmare every time I use it. I still have a hard time figuring out where they are stored at. In the file, in an rsc, or in a dgnlib? Usually its 2 out of 3 and I can never tell which two.
I didn't learn .lin first. I learned .lin because its far simpler, faster and easier to maintain linestyles. It also improves compatibly between the two products.
We shouldn't have to learn how to double clutch shift an 18 speed semi just to go to the corner store.
Bentley does a lot of great stuff on the programming side but the one thing they never seem to understand is "simple".

thats ok for a one of element in a one off dgn but it needs to become a linestyle so all users and all drgs can share it for any job...
and exportable for wally cad users
