Creating Custom Linetype

New to microstation *

I'm trying to create a linetype that looks like this:

....    ....    ....    ....

I'm not having any luck by going to element -> linestyles , and trying to create in there. Any advice on this situation?

Thanks

  • As MickeyKom said you can do this now with Linear Patterning and that's very easy for any beginner to understand. just create the line work, create a cell from it and use it in the Linear Patterning tool.

I realize that creating Custom Line Styles is not simple. But then again they are so flexible and can be so complex with the ability to create symbols with filled areas, and different colors and Line Codes, parallel lines of different types/weights, shifting & modification of dash & gap scales dash widths, 3D Line Styles, etc., etc., etc., etc.. What features do you want to remove to make it simple? I would hope none! If you want simple just use the Linear Patterning with a cell.

The Line Style I created for southpawj05 took a couple of minutes to create. It would have looked the same if you had created a cell and used that but you would loose some of the flexibility of the Custom Line Style. Like anything else the more flexibility the harder it is to create or learn to create. You just have to invest the time to learn and once you learn you have to reinforce it by doing it as often as you can or you will loose it. Everyone builds their knowledge upon what they already know so creating the line Style using the .lin (ASCII) way works OK too. but if you want other abilities (i.e. parallel line work, etc.) you have to learn the tool. You didn't learn how to drive a car safely in an hour or a day. I'm still trying to invest the time to learn Dimension Driven Cells which seems to be somewhat similar to the Dynamic Blocks in A-CAD (but not quite!).

Sorry for the rant! Just my 2¢ !

Its just the interface to build them is sooooo bad.  Its probably great if your a professional line style builder.  If your not using it once a week its a pain to figure out.  Its this Deja vu nightmare every time I use it.  I still have a hard time figuring out where they are stored at.  In the file, in an rsc, or in a dgnlib?  Usually its 2 out of 3 and I can never tell which two.

I didn't learn .lin first.  I learned .lin because its far simpler, faster and easier to maintain linestyles.  It also improves compatibly between the two products.

We shouldn't have to learn how to double clutch shift an 18 speed semi just to go to the corner store.

Bentley does a lot of great stuff on the programming side but the one thing they never seem to understand is "simple".

totally agree with you I have had to use it and its bring out the notes from 1995 classes and for something simple its the same effort as something complex..

it is interface since IDGS pre microstation from intergraph and Bentley have not  changed or improved it again I say we need two interface tools for line style one easy like creating a cell and it saves it to an RSC line style file the other can stay the same horrible complex drag out the manuals ... as gearge said its easy if you do it often I can use it but I hate it... as it always take me 2 or 3 attempts to get it right... and the help file is rubbish for this.. the old V5 manual is still the best dfor this but so many steps and so many features  .. very good for very complex stuff and you can learn it but I forget how by the time 2 or 3 years have gone by when we need a new one... standards dont change alot very often...

  • We are a little off track.

I will agree that the interface in not easily understood and could be redone but the flexibility is there and I would not like to give any of it up just for an update.

    PS: southpawj05

Did Regies' answer solve your problem?

  • Most Programmers can handle simple tasks.

Good Programmers can handle complex tasks

Great Programmers make complex tasks simple.

  • DavidG,

Preach it brother Amen.... and IT departments make simple tasks complex and impossible to change or use!
