Multi-Line Dimension Text

In Microstation, how does one make text from "A" look like text in "B" in the attached image? (To stradle the dimline rather than sit above)

Thanks.

  • Try this:

    Microstation SS3 08.11.09.714

    ProStructures V8i SS8 v8.11.14.238

  • That works, to add the SU to the line below.  But, if you want to modify dimension to say "TYP" or "CLR" or something to that effect, it doesn't work right.

In AutoCAD, you would type "\X" in the dim text editor to get it to pop a second line of text below the dimension line.

Is there something similar in Microstation Dim Text Editor?

  • I've found this:-

Dimension styles the advanced Tab> Symbols> Prefix. Unfortunatley you can only type in one character. But I suppose you may be able to do something with a cell - I'm not very knowledgeable on using cells though.

I'd imaging it would be easy [ish] for the folks at bentley to increase the character count for the prefix / Suffix??

  • If a user must create an entire new Dimension Style to take care of the 2-5% of dimensions to do this kind of thing, then that is rediculous.

Besides that, Bently really needs to get with the times and overhaul the entire text editing method in Microstation.  Compared to AutoCAD, the text/dimtext editing and placement is in the stone age of drafting software, back with AutoCAD r12 (pre-y2000).

  • Agreed. Will they?

  • Currently  you can only do this manually  you would be better off to make a macro that  activates the dim tool and then  places a cell ( TYP.)

below the  dim line I remember  doing  just that  years ago  in mech drafting  in a previous life ... wouldn't be hard start with the recorder and  modify to fine tune..

Of course they will just like they  will fix or add the following without  external addons or verticals or 3rd party tools:-

Tag data  import  to update tags from excel or text tables to multiple dgn from excel ( only  20 years and counting)

Simplify the Line style creation tool or add  a simple line style creation tool for simple line and text linestyles  ( only  20 years and counting)

Text editor menu improvement  for bullets indent etc  ( only  10  years and counting)

leader copy text increment ( like  numbering call outs 1, 2,3 and  keeping  count) ( only  15 years and counting)

Simple Bill of materials with tags tool  or links to elements  to/ from  table( only  20 years and counting)

Multi-lines with curves. ( only  20 years and counting)

Automatic Update tables if  changes to linked excel files have happened since last opened dgn   upon  open dgn again  ( only  15  years  and counting)  not been fixed as it says it can but has never worked...

oh well maybe new connect can do one or two of these  or maybe  new features will sugar coat the  features that were still waiting for...

or maybe if we ask the  tooth fairy really  nicely  ( we'd have more chance of it happening).. haha!

I love  Microstation but it could be  even better!

Autodesk is leaving us way behind in developed improved tools...

  • True, Autdesk is leaving Microstation behind. I still prefer AutoCAD. But, I have to say that their Customer Service is horrible. They don't respond to inquiries, their marketing sucks.

So, the people that make the decision (people who don't use this stuff everyday for production, just count the $$'s) about what software to buy get reeled in on the Bentley way of doing things (very Apple-esque marketing) to a product that is subpar in today's world. Then, we who sit and do the work are inconvenienced at so many steps throughout the day. The bosses complain our productivity goes down and costs them more money. They don't understand that when, metaphorically, you give a construction crew a 1986 YUGO to excavate earth for a building foundation, it is going to take a little longer.
