Google Earth export is scaled wrong

I have been trying to export a file into google earth and it is scaled incorrectly.  I am using 2 placemarks, the first placemark (Point 2) is located correctly and the second (Point 3) falls short of the mark, and the whole file is displayed incorrectly.  The attached image shows the original placemarks and how they were imported.

The original file has no coordinate system so I need to use the placemarks.

What am I doing wrong?

  • Hi,

    did you follow these steps:

    1. In Google Earth, create a placemark at the required location and save it as a KML file, by right clicking the placemark and selecting Save As.

    2. In the design, use the Define Placemark Monument tool to define a monument point that matches the location of the Google Earth placemark.

    3. In the design, use the Export Google Earth (KML) File tool to export to a Google Earth KML or a KMZ file.

In case you did but the results are still the same, please attach a zipped folder (DGN file and KMLs or KMZ files) for testing

  • Check the measurements in Google Earth vs the dgn file you are working in. Since the graphics have no scale in the dgn you can adjust the scale of the objects in the dgn to fit the measurements in Gogle Earth

I Hope This Helps Someone Reading This!  (Intergraph>PseudoStation>MicroStation user since 1980's)

  • I did come up with a workaround: I placed one placemark in the file then downloaded the Google earth image into the CAD file, then I scaled my drawing to fit the downloaded image.  I don't like it because it makes it difficult to add thing to the drawing file after it is scaled.

I did add the file placemarks I made in Google Earth, the cad file I am working in and the exported .KMZ file.  (changes have been made to the cad file)

  • Hi,

I have taken a picture from Google Earth and created three place marks.

Note: Ruler used to measure the distance in feet between two points to adjust the raster once in MicroStation.

I attached the raster image in MicroStation, rotated the raster to fit image with design and also scaled the raster.

As you can see in the picture one of the green triangles is exactly in its place, with proper size and with proper rotation but as you can see the rest of the elements in your drawing are incorrect.

Every element in this drawing seems to be shifted in different directions and also the distance shifted by them is not the same (I was expecting to see these elements shifted in the same way: direction and distances). This makes me think that the problem is not in Google Earth export but rather in how you have drawn the design file.
