Align Elements

Fisrt, sorry if this is the wrong forum. I can't figure out anything Bentley today.

V8i SS3 08.11.09.357

I want to *exactly* align one element with another. The align tool draws a rectangle in the XY directions around the base element to align edges in the XY direction.

I want to take an element and align its whole self, rotated and translated, with another element. This could be a rectangular block that I no longer want oriented in the XY direction, a text element, whatever.

I can rotate an element and eyeball it pretty close, but close is not good enough for what I need to do. It has to exactly match the rotation of the base element.

Advice?

Thanks,

David

  • That's another great teaching book you've come up with Lorys. It's avail as free pdf:

MicroStation for AutoCAD Users - Engineering.com

  • ahh you didnt say your a convert!

under help look up autocad users ... we have alias commands in mstn that ie if you cant think of right tool in mstn but know the acad command then from keyin window keyin dwg  and you  open the dialog fully and you can see all the common acad  commands  and sub commands if you run one then right mstn tool pops up so learn msnt faster...

in help there are some good tutorials  ie getting started and accudraw.. read both these and especially the accudraw and accusnap if you master these two  and basic tools you'll leave your mstn  colleagues behind in no time.. oh learn how to use reference files much better than acad as can copy through to live without insertion point and like acad  can edit theref without leaving the session via activate /deactivate ... ref files and  right mouse button are two of the best features in msnt

get as much training as you can even if you have to buy a book... anything by Keith Little ( now out dated) is still great help.  Harnessing mstn is very good book but not " Inside mstn "( very basic and more expensive) IMHO  it is no better than help file I bought it and was disappointed...

also mstn 8 for acad is helpful but also a little old   best price form here  www.bookdepository.com/.../9781418041823 but depends on which country your in maybe amazon better for you...

  • Thanks Lorys and Darius. I will give these methods a shot. I am a long time dark sider (Autodesk), so your help is invaluable to helping me get accustomed to mstn. I appreciate your time.

  • ok found another quick way keyin active angle 2p then follow prompts this will set the active angle by a side of the  rotated polygon now just use rotate element tool it will have active angle set  use make copy so you can move the rotated element copy to the original position as when I did it it moved  and rotated then delete the original ... angle assistant tool is easier but you have to have it to load it and  its always better to know how from first principals and default mstn tools

  • use information tool on the master element it should tell you lots of information about the element including its rotation angle you can copy this  with the mouse then repeat with the element you want to rotate and paste the angle .. this works perfect with text so should with a polygon too..

I'll jump in cad and test my theory... now... nope only works with text how ever if you examine with information tool or measure angle tool you can determine the rotation angle hen use rotate by active angle and change it to the angle it needs to be from previousmeasurement and use  one corner of the element to rotate as the pivot point...

pity it doesnt work like text...

Tried accudraw and RE buti just cant seem to make the  right sequence it should work with accudraw...

I think you can also use an mdl called angle assistant to work out the angle and make it the active angle then rotate the elelent by active angle

But I like to do things abit old school may take more steps but always works first time and no mental arithmatic about what the angle in which quadrant  ( info tool has 4 segments all with differet angles which is which)  say rotated rectangle say 25degto the x axis but you dont know that yet so   trace a line via accudraw along one  side from its pivot point  and make it longer than rectangle move this line to the same point on object to rotate now use rotate 3 points  using this line as the last point  furthest from the pivot then delete the line ...
