Good catch on the ACS Plane lock. I totally missed that. Another point to add to this is that if you do turn on Accudraw you will also need to go into the Accudraw settings (<Settings <Accudraw). You will need to click on the Coordinates tab and switch the <Coordinate System <Rotation to View rather than Auxiliary. Having Accudraw rotation to Auxiliary will force Accudraw to always align with the ACS so even when you rotate your view the text placement will continue to be along the ACS axis. If you do not have Accudraw on the text will be placed according to the view or Active Angle setting relative to the view rotation.

RE: [V8i] How to set text to be view-dependent by default?

George A. If you rotate the view to Top then set an ACS according to the view your text can be placed correctly. For whatever reason everything keeps referencing the custom ACS.
I don't know if this has any bearing on your situation.

It comes up with a particular text style and place text by Origin

The text places by origin and is rotated according to the world NOT the way you are viewing your data

If I change to View Independent as with the upper of the 2 lines of text

It will place View Independent as it should

This placement is NOT saved as a part of the text style but a way to place text

So to make it the default

Open your seed - start to place text and select the style and View Independent - then save the seed

It will now open that file View Independent until someone changes it.

Now you can also have a macro start so every time you open the file it is View Independent

You can also create a function key or an icon to use to start any text that includes a keyin to make it View Independent

But There is no way I no of to make it revert ONLY to View Independent

It to make that the first option you would need to change the keyin to start "Place text" to also include whatever is necessary to make it View Independent..

RE: [V8i] How to set text to be view-dependent by default?

I generally use type-in commands, so I don't see that setting.

We have a terminology problem. The text is NOT view independent. The situation is that the text is being placed by the global orientation rather than the view orientation or AccuDraw. For some reason, AccuDraw is not coming up when you place text.

To demostrate, rotate the view to a random angle and then try to place text relative to the view. The text inserts at the active angle, relative to the global origin rather than the view rotation.

I noticed that the model is marked as a cell. That could be the first problem.

I also noticed that if you use AccuDraw for anything, you can hit the V key for view, but as soon as your command stops, AccuDraw returns to the T mode (model top rather than view). I also noticed that if you do get AccuDraw to come up for placing text, the text will be placed per AccuDraw as expected.
