[V8i SS3 8.11.9.459] References not updating (at all)

Hey all,

Before I submit a ticket to Bentley support and packup up examples of everything, I thought I'd ask in here:

In a number of different instances now, users have come to me complaining that their references aren't updating anymore; Take a typical 2D sheet with some external references into the default model (at 1:1) and then a scaled self-reference into the sheet model. Normal behaviour is that all references are automatically updated - we have MS_REF_NEWLEVELDISPLAY set to 1 as a site variable and most of these problems are appearing in newly-created sheets from seed. Even if we key-in "update reference", or manually reload the reference, it refuses to update. The really fishy thing is that the self-reference refuses to update - if we draw any old thing in the default model, even that isn't appearing in the direct reference attached to the sheet model of the same file. So far the only fix is to detatch the file completely and re-attach it but that wastes all the work done in the file after the references and is a complete nightmare for layouts with multiple clipped references rather than something like a simple, single plan view in the sheet.

I have searched the forums briefly but can't find much other than the keyin, or the MS_REF_NEWLEVELDISPLAY variable. For the record, the reference files are not in use according to the reference status and the "reload reference" command ought to update regardless of whether someone else is using that particular reference, right?

Maybe it's a bug, maybe I'm wrong to expect all references to update dynamically, but I thought that the whole point of referencing instead of using saved views was so that you always saw the latest, live data.

Any suggestions/help appreciated.

    Hi,

Try changing the Display Overrides option from the References dialog in the Sheet Model to Never. You may need to Save Settings and close and reopen the file. See image attached below...

But doesnt changing to never  is actually whats happening  changes not reflected... shouldnt it be changed to always instead..

or does refing into sheet models work differently from refs in normal models....?

  • Hi,

Changes to the level display of the nested file while in the Sheet Model will not be retained if set to Never. The display will be controlled by the how the parent file (the Design Model in this case) is set up. Changes made in the Sheet will Never override the Design Model with the option set to Never (assuming this is the workflow).

  • I also have this problem. Lorys, did this resolve your problem?

I tried changing the Display Overrides option from the References dialog in the Sheet Model to Never, then Saved Settings and closed and reopened the file. This did not resolve the problem. Does this only work after you go through the process of detaching and re-attaching the reference?

the change to never  doesnt  make any difference, senario A

3 ref files are attached to model space  file  X not nested  ref call it ref B  has  all line work red bylevel

the file X model is self referenced into its sheet model which now acts as if model file X is nested file.

next day we change the  colours inside Ref B to Grey ..

open File X model space and no change  still red, go to level manager  and  update levels now looks ok is grey in models space

open sheet model file X and nested sub ref B is still Red line work .. no updating ref or even  "reload reference  force "command makes any  difference.

if I detach the reference in the modelspace and reattach the ref B then look at sheet  and its correct now grey for Ref B..

The ref attach is dialog is set to never  or always dosent  change anything..

I dont  believe that project wise is to blame , I believe there must be  a setting in the workspace config from the network cad manager  and its set to never allow nested refs to change  or update symbology....cant prove this as not allowed to go there.. but in a previous job I set that to not be the case as I always wanted to see changes in ref files attached to models ( no sheets paces in that  job) even if nested... and  it worked.. so I'm forced to detach the offending ref B file and reattach it to get the changes in the sheet model...
