Place Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Symbol

Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing features can be placed with the Place GDT Feature tool. The GDT features can be created containing single or compound feature control frames and they can be placed as a feature or as a note, with or without leader lines.

GDT features can be completely customized. Tool settings are available for adding tolerance symbols, modifying symbols, and for incorporating text with the feature, outside of the feature control frame.

The following tool settings are available for this tool:

Tool Setting Effect
Dimension Entered text is incorporated above the feature control frame.
Preview Window Displays the geometric tolerance symbol.
Compound The selected geometric tolerancing symbol applies to feature control frames one and two when on.
Diameter Symbols Precedes the tolerance value with a diameter or spherical diameter prefix symbol.
Tolerance Value Fields Entered tolerance values and datum references are incorporated into the feature control frame.
Feature Control Frame Selects feature control frame one, two, or three, for data entry.
Geometric Tolerance Symbol Selected geometric tolerance symbols are incorporated into the feature control frame.
Modifying Symbol Selects the modifying symbol abbreviation and incorporates the symbol with the corresponding tolerance value in the feature control frame.
Comments Entered information is integrated below the feature control frame. Modifying symbols can also be entered here.
Standard Selects the Standard for geometric tolerance specification (ANSI, ISO, JIS, DIN).
Direction The geometric tolerancing symbol is placed automatically, or to the left or right of the leader line.
Terminator Selects the leader line terminator.
Place Note The geometric tolerancing symbol is placed with a leader line attached to the feature control frame.
Generate Leader The geometric tolerancing symbol is placed with a leader extension line attached to the feature control frame.
Clear All Clears all tool settings.

To place a geometric dimensioning and tolerancing symbol

Select the Place GDT tool.

  1. When placing the GDT feature as a note, enter a data point to identify the start point for the leader.
  2. Enter a data point to place the feature.
  3. Only one data point is necessary to place the feature when the feature is not placed as a note. The feature dynamically displays during placement.

Place Datum Symbol

The Place Datum tool can be used to place datum feature symbol geometry and call outs. The Datum method specifies call outs for datum lines and the Target Datum method specifies call outs for datum targets.

When placing datum line call outs using the Datum method, three styles of datums (ANSI 94, ISO, and ANSI 82) are available. The ANSI 94 and ISO datum call outs place with a triangular base and feature letter frame, and the leader line connecting the base and frame can be placed with several vertices. The ANSI 82 datum call out places a feature letter frame only, containing a feature letter with hyphens on both sides of the letter. Datum line features can be identified with any combination of call out letters.

When placing Target Datum call outs, target area data and target datum letters can be specified. In the event that target area data does not fit within the symbol geometry, a tool setting can be activated to place the data above the geometry as a note. A selection of leader lines and leader line terminators is also available for placement with Target Datum symbol geometry.

The following tool settings are available when selecting the Datum method option:

Tool Setting Effect
Method Selects the Datum method.
Feature Letter Selects the datum letter.
Fill Triangle Fills the base triangle area solid.
Direction The datum is placed automatically, or to the top, left, bottom, or right of the leader line.
Standard Selects the Standard for datum specification (ANSI 94, ISO, DIN, ANSI 82).

The following tool settings are available when selecting the Target Datum method option:

Tool Setting Effect
Method Selects the Target Datum method.
Target Area Entered values place in the upper half of the target datum feature.
Target Letter Entered values place in the lower half of the target datum feature.
Diameter When on, a diameter symbol places with the target area data.
Note Above When on, target area data places above the target datum feature.
Standard Selects the Standard for target datum feature specification (ANSI, ISO, JIS, DIN).
Generate Leader Selects the manner in which the leader line will be oriented/connected to the target datum feature.
Terminator Selects the type of terminator that places at the end of the leader line.
Back Side When on, the leader line places with a hidden line style indicating that the target datum is identified with a feature located on the "back side" of the object.
Hatch Available only when the circle or block terminators are selected. When on, fills the terminator with hatching.

To place a datum

Select the Place Datum tool.

  1. Select the Datum Feature Method.
  2. Enter a data point to locate the base of the datum feature.
  3. When placing an ANSI 82 style datum, only one data point is required for datum placement.
  4. Enter the vertex points of the leader line with successive data points.
  5. Reset to stop the placement of leader line vertex points and to place the datum feature.
  6. The datum feature dynamically displays during placement until the final position is entered with a reset.

To place a target datum

Select the Place Datum tool.

  1. Select the Target Datum Method.
  2. Enter a data point to place the target origin.
  3. The feature will dynamically display.

Dynamically move the feature into place and enter a data point to place the feature.

Place Surface Finishing Symbol

Surface finishing symbols can be placed with the Place Surface Finishing Symbol tool. Surface roughness option menus can be customized to offer commonly used roughness setting options. Values for waviness height and width, roughness width, and material removal allowance can be specified, and lay direction symbols can also be incorporated with the symbol.

The following tool settings are available for this tool:

Tool Setting Effect
Surface Roughness Selects the roughness average values.
All Around Geometry The all around symbol geometry is integrated when selected.
Symbol Tail Information Values for waviness height and width, and roughness width are placed with the symbol. A line for the symbol tail is placed when data is entered.
Material Removal Allowance Specifies an allowance value when material removal is required.
Surface finishing Symbol Geometry Surface finishing symbol geometry is integrated when selected.
Lay Direction Symbol Selection indicates the lay direction to the line, representing the surface to which the symbol is applied.
Standard Selects the Standard for the symbol specification (ANSI, ISO, JIS, DIN).
Direction Available only when Generate Leader is on. The symbol is placed automatically, or to the left or right of the leader line.
Terminator Available only when Generate Leader is on. Places the leader line with or without an arrowhead.
Clear All Clears all tool settings.
Generate Leader When on, places a leader line with the symbol.
Settings Opens the Surface Finishing Settings dialog box for customizing the Surface Roughness option menus.

Options Window: shows all entered roughness average values.
New: enter new roughness average values in the Options field.
Delete: delete highlighted roughness average values in the Options window.

To place a surface finishing symbol

Select the Place Surface Finishing Symbol tool.

  1. Select the element upon which the surface finishing symbol will be placed.
  2. The finishing symbol can be dynamically moved along the surface of the element when the generate leader option is off.
  3. A surface finishing symbol can also be placed in space. In this case the symbol can be dynamically rotated around the initial data point to move it into position.

Dynamically move the symbol into place and enter a data point to place the symbol.

Place Welding Symbol

Welding symbols can be placed with the Place Welding Symbol tool. Symbols can be fully customized by selecting weld joint symbols and detail reference symbols. Fields are available for including length, pitch spacing, size, and other important weld symbol information. Weld symbol geometry can also be customized by selectively activating symbol geometry components.

The following tool settings are available for this tool:
