Default pdf.pltcfg settings have caused lots of hours for the interpretation by the "Printer Software"(24 hours): how reducing this time?

Hello! My name is Roberta Luccioli. I am currently using Microstation XM + Bentley map (version 08.09.04.78). I need clues about PLTCGF files configuration (in terms of color level allocation, resolution etc) to be set-up into pdf in a way that the "print shop" can easily import my pdf into the printing SW. The import of the default pdf.pltcfg setting has caused lot's of hour as all image point needed to be calculated by the printing SW (24 hours). So my questions are: 1. How can I go through this set-up in order to reduce the time for the print shop to interpret the configuration file? 2. which are the most important Print Definitions Parameters that should be taken into account to reach this purpose: Rasterized versus Non-Rasterized Printing? RGB Raster Compression? Raster Color Depth? 3. how can I generate different PDF levels which are going to map exactly my DGN levels? Do I need further SW components? Best Regards Roberta Luccioli

    You are likely printing in rasterized mode.  This is necessary in some workflows, but probably not what you want -- especially if you want to control levels and references in Acrobat.

    The Rasterized control may be turned off in the Print dialog.  You can also specify a default value for the control in the printer driver configuration file.  I suggest reading this blog article for more information about rasterized vs. non-rasterized printing:

  • Hello Andrew, I have another different question to submit. Since I am quite new relating these printing issues, sometimes I get into confusion. I want to define my own pen table for resymbolizing the printed output of design files. Actually, which is the difference between : 1. Color maps defined in the .pltcfg file 2. Pen maps functionlity, which is available in the pen table configuration interface. 3. Element Output Action pen table resymbolization Particularly relating issues 1. and 2., I do not succeed in understanding the difference. Else, If I do not create any colour map (neither with Color Maps , nor with Pen Maps) what the application is going to do? Finally, which is the recommended workflow? It would be better to define the colour mapping only through the pen tables functions, only in the pltcfg file, or both? And in which order? Thanks in advance for your support. Regards, Roberta
  • There is no functional difference between pen color maps defined in a pen table vs. those defined in a printer driver configuration file. If both are defined, the pen color maps in the pen table take priority. The .pltcfg color maps were introduced long ago; the pen table pen color maps are a more recent feature.

    The color assignments defined in a pen table element output action operate on per-element basis. They are useful if you wish to change the color of an element based on its level, reference, etc. When you assign a new print color to an element via a pen table element output action, the entire element is affected.

    When using pen color maps, either defined in the pen section of a pen table or a printer driver configuration file, it is not possible to segregate elements based on level, reference, etc. The pen color maps are applied on a low-level geometry basis, with no input criteria other than graphic's color index. This allows selective resymbolization of multi-colored elements such as custom line styles, text styles, and patterning.

    The explanation gets complicated when the print color is specified both in a pen table element output action and a pen color map. Basically the pen table element output action is applied first. If the pen table element output action specifies an RGB color, then the entire element will be printed in that color regardless of any pen color maps. If the pen table element output action specifies an index color, then that index color is subject to be remapped via pen color maps for each piece of geometry making up that element.

    If neither the printer driver configuration file nor the pen table contain pen color maps or element output color actions, then the elements will be printed using the same color they display in the view.

    The recommended workflow depends on what you're trying to accomplish. In general, it would be a good idea to avoid defining pen color maps in both the printer driver configuration file and the pen table. That would just lead to confusion.

    If all you are trying to do is substitute a simple color table at print time, or perform any uniform resymbolization based on color index, then pen color maps are the best choice. Whether you choose to define them in a pen table or .pltcfg file depends on your preference. If you don't need a pen table for any other reason, then you might want to place the color assignments in your .pltcfg file. If you use multiple .pltcfg files and/or need a pen table for other purposes, then it would likely be easier to consolidate your resymbolization into a single pen table file.

    If you need to selectively resymbolize elements based on their level, reference, or criteria other than color index, then pen table element output actions are required.

    If all you are trying to do is print everything in black & white, or in grayscale, then there is a color mode control on the Print dialog that can be used for that purpose, without having to mess with pen maps or element output actions.

  • Dear Phil, Andrew, Sorry for that, you are fully right. My main thread remains the one on "how configuring at my best the pltcfg files as well as the pen tables to reduce time for printing". So, according to both the explanations I have received: 1. Since I understand from Andrew that if the task is substituting a simple color table at print time, or perform any uniform resymbolization based on color index, the pen color maps are the best choice 2. Since the indexed color saves a lot of memory/storage space and transmission time 3. Since the output chart I have to plot has to be of a high quality (it is an official aeronautical chart) 3. Since the 24 houts for printing were spent due to the fact that image points needed to be calculated by the printing SW. Do you think that printing in NON-RASTERIZED MODE and performing the re-symbolization based on color index, through the pen color maps can grant to me to get contemporary an high quality output and the optimization of performances for printing?
