When I click on the little "magnifying glass" (print dialog box) to take you to the "Plotdrv" folder, there are several plot driver files that are there twice (pdf, jpeg, png, tiff, printer, ...). This seems to have always been the case (in XM anyway, don't think it was before, but maybe it was)
I've occasionally tried swapping them, but it didn't seem to make any difference.
Question then, ..... why 2 of each and can we just get rid of the duplicates (the older ones ????????)

It sounds like you've got your operating system configurated to hide file extensions. I'd strongly suggest changing that, so that you see the entire file name in Windows Explorer, file pickers, etc. IMHO, Microsoft's default behavior in this regard is one of the major defects in Windows.
