PDF Created from DGN with Pasted Image from Word is printing with Black Shape Adjacent to Image

There are two drawings in a set of plans with a Word Document Pasted in as an Image. On Screen, in Plot Preview and PDF, they look fine. But when printed to a printer/copier, there appears to be a dark/black shape adjacent to the image. It is about twice as wide and tall as the image, but behind the image. So it looks like a fat, sideways L around two sides of the image.

We did find that turning off print as image in the PDF printer dialog made it OK, but should that happen? Is that a bug in the PDF file or the PDF Printer?
