Rasters always print on top?

Background: We very recently upgraded to v8i, skipping XM and coming directly from v8.5 (2004).

I cannot figure out how to get rasters to print underneath the linework.  Right now every raster prints atop all linework no matter what I've tried, covering up the linework upon plotting. I've looked into all option screens, property and preference screens and found no setting for something like "print rasters first, then print linework".  I've selected the linework in microstation and done EDIT-BRING TO FRONT, but the raster still obliterates it upon printing.

Our workflow here is to print to PDF, then plot the PDF when needed.  Oddly, when I open the PDF files, the linework appears briefly, then it is covered by the raster images as they load in.  So the linework IS indeed plotting, but the plot order is wrong and I cannot figure out why.

I realize this could possibly be a print driver issue, and that's out of my league.  Hopeful someone can suggest an option/config/preference change to help me here.  Why am I having this trouble with v8i?  Thanks.  Al B.

  • My personal soulution for this issue is to add a few lines to a pen table.  I add a line that takes type=raster and assigns a priority of -2.  Then I add type=everything but rasters and text and assign a priority of 2.  Then to top things off (no pun intended) I add type=all texts types and assign a priority of 5.  This makes sure that the linework is on top of the raster and that the text prints over the linework, especially important if you are utilizing the text background feature.

  • We have been experiencing the same issues in my office.  Basically we have a 2D plan sheet with a raster directly attached to it and several reference files some of them being 3D.  The raster shows up on top of all the references both 3D and 2D when opened in V8i.  The priorities and pen table fixes will not work for us.  The pen table fix makes it print fine but we still cannot see the line work unless we shut off the raster or adjust the priorities.  The reason the priorities won't work is because there are several hundred existing sheets and no one has the time or budget to adjust all files.  The solution we have is to continue using V8 2004 to keep from making time consuming changes.  I was told by someone at Bentley support to just export the 3D ref file to 2D... sure that fixed it but it still requires a lot of time to fix all sheets and why do we need to go back to the days of Microstation J.  It doesn't make since that a file that works fine in V8 2004 requires a bunch of rework to get it to work in V8i.  This has stopped our roll out plan until we can find a fix that doesn't require the changes mentioned above.  I have been notified that there is a TR submitted reguarding this... 265080 is the number.

I have had a similar but perhaps unrelated problem to deal with. I recently needed to make a few hundred plots and found that when rasters were referenced to the dgn file they wanted to be on top. I am using V8 2004 8.05.00.64. The raster files I am referencing are georeferenced tif files. The vector mapping needs to be on top of the raster. i have hundreds of files to deal with.

The first batch I referenced the files and manually set the raster to go to the background by opening the raster manager dialog and then opening the settings > update sequence dialog. I then had to select the raster reference (All) and hit the up button to put them at the top. This worked well but was more than a little frustrating to do 60 times ... and I have more plots to make.

Today I figured out how to keep the settings. I am a V8 newbie so in order to get the settings from file to file here is the process:

    1. make an empty file where this process has been done so that the setting to update the rasters is stored in the file.

    2. copy the "seed" file to a name that is meaningful and reference the file with the linework that I want. File fence the data into the file and detach the reference file.

    3. reference the image using the ever so helpful keyin: RASTER ATTACH FIXED "d:\path\image.tif"

The image displays properly and plots properly as well.

     Hope this helps, Don
