Print Organizer - Print Definition By Fence, Reference File Name Variable

I just spoke to Bentley Tech Support regarding this, but they didn't have a solution at this time.  I thought I'd throw it out to the community to see if anyone else has come across this issue and may have a suggestion.

We are currently running MS versions V8i SS2 through SS4 across the company.  We have a client who restricts the use of sheet models, so all "sheets" for this client are a DGN design models with references clipped around a border.  The border is a DGN reference file with multiple models (for multiple border types) which contains project specific information in each border.  Each border model also contains a closed shape used as a print boundary, which has the same attributes for each border/model.  We have a PrintOrganizer.dgnlib setup for this client which contains about 20 print style variations.  The print style variations are minor, but allows us to batch print various paper sizes to a hard copy or a PDF, print in color or black & white, and a variety of raster settings for different needs.  These Print Styles are all setup to create prints by fence defined from the shape in the border reference file for each project. This has worked great for us, however, each time we get a new project with this client, we need a new border, which has a new border name; this requires us to go back to the PrintOrganizer.dgnlib and add the name of the new project border to the reference file list for each print style.  This issue definitely is not a major problem, it takes just a few minutes to update the .dgnlib manually in each style.

It seems like I should be able to define a variable (i.e. "BORDERREF") in the PCF which contains the name (or names) of the border reference file(s) for that project.  I have tried this, however, Print Organizer does not expand the variable (i.e. $(BORDERREF)) in the print style, therefore, it does not find the reference file or it's print boundary.  Is there a way to make PO expand the custom variable?  Or is there a MS variable can be defined with each PCF?  Given that there are variables for pretty much everything in MS, it seems that there are several PO settings that could be controlled with a variable.

Any other ideas?  Thanks!
