Printing - Override Issue

Version v8i SS4

OK, this will be a fun one to tackle :)

Basically, the client wants to display the background topographic as fine dotted-black lines, the linetype remains the same.

When using a combination of pltcfg and pen (design script) files, it used to work but now not sure what happened, the lines somehow got override to be printed as a continuous lines rather than the native linetype. For example, a striping line is plotted as a continuous line rather than a typical striping-dash line.

Question is, can someone help to tweak the pltcfg or pen files parameters for the output to be correct?
I suspect these 2 files could be the problem or may be something else like configuration files may be.

See attached picture and printing files for reference

A - correct output

B - incorrect output

Attached pltcfg and pen file. Pen file is attached as design script.

  • I opened your pentable as  a pentable thru the my printer.plcfg  file  dialog and saw that you only selected dimensions instead  of  lines  so I selected thru the tool all lines and  linestrings and set the search levle level to the one you wanted for the existing  roadway and changed output to colour 245 (grey) and linestyle 1 .

I suggest  you edit my pentable attached through print dialog and select all line types  and set the weight  too.

I suggest you dont save it as .pen  but tbl  as its a  penttable and set your printer to find it with pathing. using it in the printer dialog is easier to edit than a text file and you can see all the types you ask by type not number ie lines not dims.. I think the type 33 dims was a typo and maybe 3  instead but I would select them in the tool by type instead to be sure.. here is the basic version  I modified with half tones and  lines and  level selected to out put right.. Worked for me .. with your dgn..

  • Hi Lorys, would you mind to use this file instead.

     1588.halfbw.pen

  • It didn’t work for me at first when it was the last entry in my printing related cfg file (yes I had an empty line at the end as always). However, I moved it up a couple of lines and it started working. I can’t comment on the OP’s pen script, but as you can see mine clearly works. Shame it doesnt work for linecodes though.

  • Cancel what I said previously about my test DesignScript not working on MicroStation's internal linestyles 0-7!

DesignScripts do affect those linestyles HOWEVER, the output is NOT visible in the print preview window (which is of course, very misleading) but it does show up in a PDF.

  • Hi Barry,

Was happy to see that you can generate this type of linestyle. However, when I added this line to my CT_pdf-basic.pltcfg file, I am not able to reproduce the same effect. There are whole bunch of <....> in the pltcfg file. Where to add this?

    Do you add

    MS_PLT_DESIGN_SCRIPT_USE_POST_STROKE_LINE_STYLES

in the beginning or the end? Whenever I add a line to pltcfg file through Notepad, Microstation gives me error when loading the file in print box. Did you add this line through Microstation Print Driver Configuration box?

  • Hi Brian,

However, when I added this line to my CT_pdf-basic.pltcfg file, I am not able to reproduce the same effect.

Yeah that's not where you need to add it. You have 3 choices where you can put the entry:

    1. User Configuration File (.ucf) - Not recommended as each user has their own .ucf file.
    2. Project Configuration File (.pcf) - Perfectly viable option if the dropout effect is only for specific projects
    3. Configuration File (.cfg) - Likely the best choice and what I used.

If you arent familiar with any of these, they are simply normal text files but they have a specific syntax. I imagine your workplace will have their own cfg files so perhaps its worth speaking to whoever manages the workspace and get them to add the entry. In my case, I have a number of customised configuration variable files, one of these files contains only configuration variables related to printing/plotting.

Are you looking to make the change for all users or just yourself?

There are whole bunch of <....> in the pltcfg file.

Those dots are a button for a file browser, so if you press it, you will get a file browser dialog.

  • Like to report that once adding this line to pcf or ucf solved the issue. Thank you all!
