How to convert or print a Microstation V7 Drawing to a text searchable PDF

How do I convert or print a Microstation V7 Drawing to a text searchable PDF?

Has anyone had success to do this?

Thanks in advance for your answers or solutions.

  • Hi Arnel,

it's not clear what exactly do you ask about: Whether how to create the requested PDF from MIcroStation V7 (MicroStation V7), or your intention is to create the PDF from DGN V7 file format (V7 Drawing). To follow the best practices and specify the used product including exact version would make the situation clearer.

If your question is about MicroStation V7 (which is not supported version anymore), the text searchable PDF cannot be created directly. What should work, but it requires extra products and some tweaking and testing, is to create PostScript (using pscript.plt) and use products like Adobe Distiller or GhostScript (there are more available) to convert PostScript file to PDF.

What I remember it was not simple to configure font substitution properly, so it was not broken into lines, but at the same time it looks similarly as in MicroStation.

When you question is about DGN V7 format, with no dependency on product, all MicroStations from V8 2004 Edition are able to produce text searchable PDF directly, the only required step is to swith on this feature in a configuration file.

BTW I also recommend to search this web and Internet for similar discussions, because it was discussed many times, even when not specifically in a context of MicroStation/J (see e.g. this wiki or this old discussion).

    With regards,

  • Hi Jan,

My intention is to create (or convert) V7 dgn files to PDF (text searcheable).  I know that V7 is not supported anymore, but this is the output of the 3D program that we are using.  I don't have issue creating PDF text searchable from microstation V8 or V8i, but from V7 to PDF directly, I have no success creating a text searchable PDF.

    Thanks and Regards,

What is the name of this program that you say is creating this 3d output.?
