Named expressions sound like a great way to access a lot of information about the file, system, elements...But I have no idea how to write one.
Is there any kind of thorough documentation anywhere?
My main interest at this moment is for pen table text substitutions, but I suspect they would be far more useful than that. I just have NO idea where to start learning. My searches turned up some interesting tidbits, but it seems as if everyone already knows how to write them, they just need fine tuning. I have no idea where to start.
Hi Mary,

In fact (although many will probably disagree with me) it is quite simple, because general concept is simple. An issue can be to find the right symbol (function) in available providers.

Because NEs (Named Expressions) are nearly the same in V8i a CE, you can MicroStation CE documentation (often bettter written than V8i).

I recommend to start with some simple NE a to test them in Named Expression dialog. To use NE in printing is great thing and can be used both for individual printing and in Print Organizer, but a threat is it requires to merge more technologies together (at least NE + print driver configuration + MicroStation configuration).

Thank you both. It looks simple enough, if I can find the proper symbols to begin with.Again, thank you.
