I want to use screening in the pen table instead of transparencies to show utilities below a grayed shape used to show milling and resurfacing limits. I thought I'd been able to do this in the past, but for some reason no matter how much I screen it back the line work beneath will not show up unless I change the reference update sequences. I don't want to use transparencies because of the time it takes to print them. Am I missing something? Thanks.
If you use screening and not use transparency then element or plot priority decides which items are hidden by objects "in front" of others.
We place all of our shading shapes in their own file or model which makes it easier to prioritize.

It's possible you're thinking of the HP-GL/2 "Merge" feature, as opposed to "screening".
"Screening" (misnomer) just adjusts the color value towards white; it has no effect on opacity. HP-GL/2 "merge" would have the effect you describe. That feature is only available when printing using hpgl2.pltcfg or hprtl.pltcfg, or if using a Windows printer driver that supports it (unlikely).

I agree totally with caddcop its a bit old school but I create submodels for filled shapes and self ref with RF=.
and select the submodel that way you can force the fills to be underneath... ( oh I forgot you build the shape in the sub model but refer attach te active or default model and trace or flood region.. then detach or nest off when fer attach back to master model.)
