Strange text printing error.

Hi,

One of my colleagues has a very perculiar printing problem.

If you take a look at the attached pdf, when he opens this specific .dgn file and clicks print, the text shows with this strange character instead of the correct one (3). If he then leaves his print dialogue box open and prints again, it prints correctly as per page 2 of the PDF. Does anyone have any idea as to why this is happening??

  • I would like to know what is causing it rather than just doing that though. What if i had 1000s of drawings with the same error on?

  • owens_2k, I can not reproduce this issue on my side either. I have tested MicroStation 8.9.4.88 on Win XP. Sounds like one machine specific.

Worth to try PDF print driver from working machine in faulting machine.

I see the original file format was DGN V7.

Then post a copy of the file so it can be analysed not a pdf of before and after..

also post your pdf.pltcfg and any pentables you using to make the pdf some users here are good but not that good as to work it out without the actual dgns

    causing the issue....

  • In respond to the question, what if I have 1000s of drawings.

In approach of a problem, it is different if an issue is in a lot of drawings on multiple systems, rather than a problem happens in one or a few files on one system. This is crucial information for searchning a cause.

    Having said this.

Have done more investigation on this file. I was not able to reproduce the issue. Here are my results.

    a) When opening the file in MicroStation, a message appears (in MC) about missing fonts.

Investigation shows it’s about an SHX font called Engineering, when there is also a Resource font called Engineering.

    b) After Copying a file called Engineering.shx to directory workspace\system\font no error messages appear in MC about missing font. In my environment the font is SIMPLEX.SHX, when Engineering.SHX is expected (It might be, this is a config issue)

    c) have saved the as DXF and search for the text using notepad++ and Word. No hidden or special characters in text are seen.

This pretty much look a configuration issue.

In that case best thing to do is create a MicroStation Packager file and send that to us.

Make sure the packager file contains DGN file , the printer driver configuration file and all used fonts.

Extra test: Before sending the packager file to us, extract the packager file on your system and reproduce this in this environment.

In case the issue cannot be reproduced, it definitely proves it’s a configuration thing rather than a problem appears in DGN file.  Secondly that files are missing for reproducing. Best is to create  a new packager file having more configuration files.
