Printing Grey Scale References

Good Morning All, 
 I did read the only other thread on printing reference grey scale and using the color adjust function did not work for me. I have set my exist topo and utils (Topord01, and Utexrd01 respectively) to have a level symbology override to color 96 (what this firm uses to plot grey). If I set my dgn view attributes to print level symbology overrides, It then plots reference files I do not want to print with override symbology (ie prints with line weight of 0). When I set the view attributes dialog toggle to not print level symbology overrides it sets everything to WYSIWYG plot. In the reference dialog box, highlighting the topo file levels and then properties, I have set the override to on with the color specified, If I set the level manager to to override the references I do not want to be overridden are (ie the line weight of 1) 
 What am I missing here : ) Any help is appreciated and thank you for your time, Karen

How you do this is your decision. They all work if you have your settings/switches set correctly. 
 What is the most used and longest used (pre V8&7 it was called Level Symbology) is using the Level Override settings 
 Second most used is using Pentables 
 Third is using the Adjust reference Colors (there is a switch in that dialog to use the setting for plotting) 
 There are others also. (i.e. modifying the .plt or .pltcfg) 
 I will concentrate this reply on the Level Override option. 
 In Level Manager dialog there is a Override/By-Level switch Set the switch to Override 
 Find the Reference file levels (you want to make gray (?screened?) and select them. Turn Off the Override Line Styles and Weights and Turn On the Color and set it to the desired color (gray) 
 You probably DON'T want to Override your Active files levels so select your active files levels and turn Off the Override for all 3 (Color, Style & Weight). 
 If Override is Off the By-Level or Elements Color, Style, Weight will display. 
 If you want to see the effect of the Override you need to turn On a View Attribute (Settings > View Attribute) called "Override" This action should show you what you want for the selected view. That is the view you plot from. If you don't see weights on the view turn them On in the View Attributes dialog too or they won't plot. 
 When you go to print In the Print dialog there is a Print Attributes button along the top. Click it and confirm that the Weight and Override are On. 
 If your preview looks good it should plot that way!
