I am asking this question only to try and answer it for you guys wondering when to use the Path Tracer vs. the Ray Tracer.
I would say that we should be using the path tracer most of the time. Texture filtering, antialiasing, multiple source lights, soft shadows, transparency, caustics, reflections, and refractions slow down all ray tracers. The path tracer is super easy to use with very few settings and getting terrific…
I have updated the delivered Glass&Plastics palette in the Bentley_Materials.dgnlib to improve the rendering of transparent materials. To make shaded displays look good these materials were previously changed to use PBR definitions. VUE uses the Legacy definition for transparent materials and some settings cannot be set by using PBR definitions…

If you have tried using Fog in your Environments you have likely been frustrated with the fact that the visible environment appears crystal clear through the fog instead of being properly obscured by the fog. This problem pretty much rules out getting any believable results when a visible environment is used.
One of my Bentley colleagues Bob Bossler mentioned to me that he was trying to place a transparent object and…

I've been meaning to write this blog for some time now, and I finally find myself with two days left in the year, and a house full of family (twenty-one people - "Oh My" indeed!). Sounds like the perfect excuse to hide away in my home office and write this blog entry. I'll try to present some scenarios where splotches and blotches can occur and what steps can be taken to eliminate…

What is an Environment?
An environment is simply your surroundings; if you look around the space where you are sitting, everything that you see is your current environment. Getting up and moving to a different position would result in your environment changing. In MicroStation, the environment you specify can provide indirect light, reflections and refractions…
Volume lighting depending on the number of lights and the complexity of the scene, can be very compute intensive and require longer render times. To help you avoid some frustration when working with volume effects, I am writing this short blog on how to setup up a render using many lights with volume effects. The first step, is to get an idea of how the volume effects will appear in your scene, as…
Rendering depth of field effects can be very expensive in terms of render time. To get decent Depth of Field (DOF) results, you will need to set your antialiasing (AA) samples to at least 64 and to get very good results you will need to set the AA samples to 256.
While the rendered DOF results can be very good, if you have a copy of Photoshop, you can quickly and easily accomplish DOF effects, and with even better…
It seems maybe it might be a good time to start blogging the "Luxology Rendering Engine Failed" message and one of its likely causes. After much testing and looking at countless test cases submitted by so many of you, I have come to the realization, that 90% of these failures are directly related to MEMORY. Actually running out of memory, which as we all know, is a bad thing. Luckily most of us, only see the "engine…
