File with materials export

Hi

after years using Microstation

i want to know someting more about materials export. Every time you need to use Packager or send file and all texture you use.

Now i want to send i-model for someone - but it seems that exported file is without material too. Packager extract files and you have too many files.

Sorry, don't know if i'm clear :

Maybe is possible  to  collect all materials  ( assigned and attached )  to  new format outside file   for example  .dgnm  or something ?  and of course with possibility to extract material from this file in material editor.

Than you can send only 2 files  dgn + dgnm  file without packager or other form. Or better  -  export for publishing  to dgn* ( or i-model file ) with materials  in one.

Why dgn can't have it inside dgn ? Ok the file is bigger but if you use materials you know this. Better is simple button for detach / attach while save.

  • I would suggest you use Packager to collect all the textures when you make the Packager file remove the P in PZIP extension so it becomes a .zip file then you can easily open the file with file explorer. Make a new folder and copy all the textures and the dgns or I-model into the folder zip this up and send it......MicroStation will find the textures because the I-model and textures are in the same folder.

    Cheers,

    Jerry

  • Yes Jerry i know this. But maybe it's a time to think about one file - like exe in Lumen
You know - explain to unzip some people is hard ;)

I don't know ( understand ) why the dgn can't collect material in the file for example. Maybe Bentley can make new type of file / or add file for materials . I mean easy, simple and fast way. Like dgnlib collect some settings , maybe dgnm ( or dgnviz) can collect materials and render , light settings
  • Hi,

We have looked at this with regard to embedding textures in imodels. But it was rejected due to the potential size of the rasters. Expecially in the case of draped terrain textures.

As Jerry mentions above Packager is still the best way to do this currently.

    Regards

    Paul

  • Paul , maybe it's time to back to this idea. Maybe one ( other file ) with visualisation settigns / materials.

    - people that add big texture expect this file size i think and as i see i have not special problem with 800 - 1 gb file
    - we have year by year : faster internet connection, faster computers, bigger and faster disk drives , clouds etc...

I don't understand  idea of  share the i-model file if i must send materials as other files. Maybe time for export to v-model  with all settings :)

  • Other similar option like rasters to treat materials as we intended?

    Regards,

    José
