Point cloud rendering - best option to use pointools? How to get 3d models into pointools? dgn>Fbx>3ds>pointools??

I am trying to render some models with point clouds included to give the reality modelling impression and more context to the surrounding area.

Rendering point clouds in aecosim/microstation has not been particular successful but we have had some good results in pointools.

So, what is the best way to get 3d models into pointools. Native .dgn don't import, .dwg import but don't seem to appear (I have read in a previous post that this is an issue.) I am therefore looking at the workflow from dgn to fbx in microstation. Then fbx to 3ds in 3ds max, then 3ds into pointools. I have tried this and the models don't appear in pointools?

Any help would be appreciated.

  • So I have now managed to get hold of an .e57 file and used context capture to convert this to a mesh. The results are not great and the file is very large and cumbersome in AECOsim, it also took a long time to produce (this may be due to the hardware used). This may be because of the test case that I used however, the file contained a number of mesh security fences and the gaps may have been a cause of the problems. Does anyone have a test example showing a .e57 file converted into a mesh and rendered in aecosim with good results? Every example I come across seems to use point clouds to supplement photogrammetry information. many thanks
